Survivors of gender-based violence often experience housing instability due to the abuse. Criminalizing homelessness negatively affects survivors’ well-being and those who are trying to flee from abuse. Submit a witness slip as a PROPONENT for House Bill 1429 that prohibits the state/local government from creating or enforcing policies or ordinances imposing fines or criminal penalties against people experiencing unsheltered homelessness for occupying or engaging in life-sustaining activities on public property such as trying to stay warm, resting and eating. 🔗bit.ly/3DN7Cmq #CallToAction #Advocacy #HousingForAll #DomesticViolence #SupportingSurvivors #SafeHousingForAll #GBV

“So, in Goodmark’s view, if more arrests and prosecutions won’t help, what could? Money, for a start. The inverse correlation between income and rates of domestic violence is strong and undeniable. She endorses direct cash transfers to victims of abuse, pointing to studies in Ecuador and Peru showing that such transactions resulted in decreased rates of intimate-partner violence. She also recommends policies that would make housing more attainable for those with low incomes, poor credit scores, and little in savings.” We have seen through our own program, the Survivor Fund, and our other initiatives that survivors of gender-based violence can improve their situation if they are given financial assistance. Survivors know what they need to improve their well-being, which is why it’s important to create programs with low barriers and allow survivors to make their own choices.
