Day 3️⃣ of HLTH Inc. kicked off with the first-ever nurse #hackathon sponsored by connectRN and hosted by Rebecca Love RN, MSN, FIEL.
💪 Teams of nurses came together to innovate, collaborate, and solve real-world challenges using technology and AI. From reimagining scheduling and staffing to combating the social determinants of health, the teams worked to create solutions to common challenges in healthcare.
The hackathon panel of judges included -
Ted Jeanloz, connectRN
Tiffany Wilson, University City Science Center
Kathleen McGrow, DNP, MS, RN, PMP, FHIMSS, FAAN, Microsoft
Amy McCarthy, Hippocratic AI
The winning team developed an innovative idea for a patient-centered language solution.
Bringing an idea to life is no small feat, so team TNB then went to watch founder Michelle Stephens, PhD, CPNP, RN, CRO of Felt, share about her entrepreneurial journey alongside Lynne Chou O'Keefe of Define Ventures, Mario Schlosser of Oscar Health, and Holly Maloney of General Catalyst.
The panel was moderated by Sofia Guerra of Bessemer Venture Partners.
Michelle Stephens, PhD, CPNP, RN, stated, “Being a founder is when you can't live another day in this world without what you're building. It's a game in which speed and efficiency win."
The Nurses @ HLTH track ended with "Ask Me Anything: Nurse Innovation Edition." Moderator Oriana Beaudet, DNP RN FAAN, VP of Innovation for the American Nurses Association, asked the panelists to define innovation.
💡 Maureen Rinkunas - Redesign Health - “What innovation really comes from is leveraging empathy and creativity to solve medical problems.”
💡 Andrew Landsman - Husch Blackwell - “Innovation comes from anywhere where a problem is being solved.”
💡 Tiffany Wilson - University City Science Center - “Innovation comes from the identification, the need first and foremost, and then coming up with novel solutions to address that need in the context of what your customer wants and needs."
💡 Kathleen McGrow, DNP, MS, RN, PMP, FHIMSS, FAAN, Microsoft
“[Innovation] is really about empowerment, and it's empowering the different end users.”
💡 Michael Hasselberg, University of Rochester - "When I think of innovation, I think of healthcare innovation...Healthcare is a team sport, and nurses are just a part of that larger team…I don't like to separate medical innovation or nursing innovation. It's healthcare innovation, and we're all part of the same team.”
💡 Bre Loughlin, MS, RN, Nurse Disrupted, Inc. - "We write the story. We still command the computers, and we create a better tomorrow through technology and healthcare."
To say the least, HLTH Inc. has been inspiring, and we are grateful for the opportunity to cover press this year. For those who are interested in attending this conference, HLTH Inc. raised over $100K to bring nurses on scholarship this year, and we look forward to amplifying these opportunities next year!
