TRCP asked Captain Steve Huff about his thoughts on South Florida fishing, Everglades restoration, and the importance of clean water. "The solution to Everglades restoration is clean water coming down from the core of the state, from Orlando south through the Kissimmee, Lake Okeechobee, and delivering clean water to the Gulf and the Shark River system and Florida Bay system." Guaranteeing all Americans quality places to hunt and fish.
About us
In 1912 Theodore Roosevelt said, “There can be no greater issue than that of conservation in this country.” While in the political arena, he succeeded in making conservation a top tier national issue. T.R. had the foresight to address these issues still so significant to sportsmen today, understanding that if we want to ensure critical habitat, special hunting grounds and secret fishing holes will be around for future generations, we must plan carefully today. We guarantee all Americans quality places to hunt and fish by uniting and amplifying our partners’ voices to strengthen federal policy and funding.

Today, we celebrate a president, a conservationist, and a man whose vision we have to thank for America’s vast wilderness and wildlife populations. It’s Theodore Roosevelt’s birthday – his 166th, to be exact. As an avid hunter, angler, and all-around sportsman, Theodore Roosevelt saw the writing on the wall well over a century ago; if the sporting community wanted public lands to hunt, public waters to fish, and wildlife held in the public trust for all Americans, they would have to protect these resources themselves. Thus began America’s long journey of scientific inquiry, legislative, executive, and judicial action, and wildlife management that now bolsters our conservation ethic. We thank you for your continued commitment to TRCP’s ideals. We work hard every day to ensure they mirror those of the man whose namesake we dedicate our efforts to. Happy Birthday, TR.

Hunters and conservationists celebrate the signing of a Memorandum from Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack that directs the agency to enhance and expand its wildlife migration and habitat conservation work. This includes continued support for voluntary private landowner conservation projects and prioritization of habitat connectivity in National Forest plans, all while improving coordination with states, Tribes, and other federal agencies. “This Secretarial Memo sends a clear message that the USDA recognizes the important role that the Department’s programs and policies play to enhance big game migration and habitat across the country,” said Joel Pedersen, president and CEO of the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership. “The TRCP thanks Secretary Vilsack and the USDA for their leadership to highlight how voluntary efforts can improve wildlife habitat on public and private lands, which is crucial to ensure the next generation of sportsmen and sportswomen can experience healthy big game herds.” https://bit.ly/3BQgExQ

In The Arena: Capt. Paul Dixon Captain Paul Dixon is nothing less than a star in the guiding space off Long Island and in the Florida Keys. He essentially wrote the book on sight fishing for striped bass in the Northeastern U.S. and is the main character in author Peter Kaminsky’s 2002 book The Moon Pulled Up an Acre of Bass. He has long been a vocal champion for striped bass conservation. Dixon is an Advisory Council member for Bonefish & Tarpon Trust (BTT) – a TRCP partner – and has been featured in The Walker’s Cay Chronicles, the Millhouse Podcast, The New York Times, Outdoor Life, and Field and Stream. Dixon’s clients include Pink Floyd bassist Roger Waters and renowned Florida fisherman Flip Pallot. He’s Orvis -endorsed and named among the top 50 charter captains by Salt Water Sportsman. Dixon has used his considerable influence to forward fish conservation efforts and is recipient of the Izaak Walton Award from the American Museum of Fly Fishing and BTT’s Lefty Kreh Award for Lifetime Achievement in Conservation. Hunting with My Granddaughters TRCP Nevada field representative, Carl Erquiaga, loves hunting with his granddaughters. Spending time together afield is precious, and it also provides moments to discuss responsible hunting and the conservation of wildlife, including their migration corridors. These are invaluable lessons that deserve a classroom as wild as the sagebrush and mountains. "As fall migration unfolds, let’s remember to continue our support for vital bait species like menhaden (bunker) and other small fish that sustain our gamefish populations in the Northeast. Healthy ecosystems rely on conservation, and every effort counts." - Sergio Diaz, Long Island photographer and fly angler Learn how menhaden and other forage fish fuel fall blitzes of striped bass, bluefish, and albies. https://lnkd.in/gsGFcRQV

Good news for deer, elk, pronghorn, and bighorn sheep that live on Colorado BLM land, and the hunters who pursue them each Fall. The Colorado Bureau of Land Management signed a Record of Decision for their Big Game Habitat RMP yesterday, which aligns the federal agency’s resource development with the State of Colorado’s oil and gas regulations to conserve high priority big game habitat statewide. This also sets the precedent for efficiently incorporating new data and best management practices into BLM land use plans. Read more by visiting https://lnkd.in/gcvc-XUJ

Jaclyn Higgins, TRCP's Forage Fish Manager, talks about Menhaden impacts on the ecosystem. "A huge amount of menhaden that are being taken out of arguably the most important estuary in the United States, by the third-largest fishery in the United States, and we have no idea what those impacts are to the greater ecosystem," Higgins emphasized.
