"I often hear from frustrated friends: “Oh, fly casting is so hard, I’ll never figure that out.” Or, “I’d fish more, but the knots you have to tie are so complex.” Or, “I thought I did everything right, and the fish ate my fly, but it got off before I could land it…” "Don’t quit. Don’t lose faith. It’s supposed to be difficult. Embrace that. Learning curves are cool, and they sure as heck shouldn’t be barriers, especially in a sport that connects you with the outdoors and all the wonderful feelings you can have as river currents wrap around your shins." - Kirk Deeter, Editor-In-Chief of TROUT Magazine

This week, NOAA Fisheries announced the second round of Transformational Habitat Restoration and Coastal Resilience Projects. Among the projects recommended for funding, TU will partner with the Quinault Indian Nation to restore and improve habitat in the Queets-Clearwater watershed on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. This work will benefit struggling Coho salmon and steelhead by investing $10 million of funding provided through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act to design and install engineered log jams and restore riparian habitat. 📸 : TU’s Luke Kelly snapped a photo of Project Manager Sean Ludden standing on an engineered log jam installed by the Quinault Division of Natural Resources last year during restoration work in Shale Creek, a tributary of the Clearwater River.

Within their native range, the Kern River headwaters flowing through high-elevation meadows in the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains, California Golden Trout are struggling. Today TU and our partners at California Department of Fish and Wildlife , USDA Forest Service and ANABRANCH SOLUTIONS, LLC are embarking on an ambitious effort to restore this iconic, beloved native trout species. This project builds on years of work undertaken by a dedicated network of volunteers and will eventually restore over sixty miles of instream habitat flowing through 5000 acres in the Sierra Nevada backcountry. Our friends at American Fly Fishing Magazine highlighted The Golden Trout Project in a recent article “Investing in Gold.” Check it out!

Trout Unlimited President and CEO Chris Wood recently joined April Vokey on her Anchored Podcast for a pair of episodes on TU’s work, history and priorities. Despite being interrupted by a fire alarm, they had a wide-ranging conversation that touched on the importance of protecting native trout and salmon, opportunities to clean up abandoned mines, the benefits of dam removal, and climate resiliency for cold water ecosystems. Find both episodes with Chris Wood at anchoredoutdoors.com or wherever you listen to podcasts.

"When you “catch an angler” and prompt them to care at least a little bit about the rivers, the water, the fish and the fishing community, that’s a win that offers far, far more gratification than any trophy fish photo might provide. "So, make it a top goal to find someone, get them fired up and watch as they start to care." - Kirk Deeter, Editor-In-Chief of TROUT Magazine Stay in the loop with Kirk's 'True Cast' blogs by signing up for TROUT Weekly, our free newsletter, here: https://lnkd.in/gJEgnUJk
