🌍 Did you know that there was no global guidance on supporting the millions of people who come home from prison, jail, or supervision across the globe…. UNTIL TODAY! For the first time ever, the United Nations is focused on examining and addressing the global human rights crisis millions face worldwide as a result of their criminal conviction. Despite finishing their sentence, and irrespective of where they are in the world, people released from incarceration or supervision (probation, parole, or other noncustodial measures) too often find themselves locked out of their second chance before it even begins, barred from securing necessities like shelter and employment and facing lasting barriers from persistent stigma and discrimination. Fundamental human rights and dignity, along with access to meaningful opportunities is essential for individual and community success, public safety, and societal advancement worldwide. And yet despite this shared challenge, there existed no international consensus on recognizing this as a problem that must be addressed and no global standards, guiding principles, or best practices to provide evidence-based guidance on how to support public safety and human rights and dignity for those reintegrating from detention or sanctions… UNTIL NOW. Today, the United Nations Human Rights Council passed a HISTORIC resolution recognizing the human rights and dignity of the millions of people globally who will reintegrate from custody or supervision using people-centered language to establish the need for support that ensures reintegration is about dignity, opportunity, and human rights for all. REFORM Alliance is proud to have spearheaded this effort alongside Costa Rica, a coalition of United Nations member states, Perseus Strategies, and INHR. Restoring the right to vote isn’t just about casting a ballot—it’s about rejoining the community and having a say in shaping its future. Justyna Rzewinski, LCSW, PhD(c), a member of the inaugural class of the Reform Advocacy Institute, recently organized a voter registration event at Revcore specifically for justice-impacted individuals, many of whom were registering and voting for the very first time. After years of feeling unheard, these community members are stepping back into their roles as active participants in building a stronger, more inclusive society.
