It was an honor to participate in a California Forward panel hosted by the University of California Possibility Lab, where we discussed the vital role collaboration plays in building a sustainable, resilient, and inclusive California economy. To meet the state’s housing and energy needs, stakeholders from diverse sectors discussed how we might align goals and work together, despite differing priorities. The challenges are clear, but the path forward involves innovative engagement and collaboration models that prioritize long-term benefits for all. At Somos Group, we work daily with clients solving for this very issue, creating solutions that bring communities, governments, and industries together in developments for lasting impact.

Thanks to our speakers and attendees for making the inaugural State of the Worker Summit, hosted by our nonprofit affiliate, the Somos Accelerator for Economic Resilience, a huge success! Leaders from business, labor, nonprofits, and philanthropy came together to reimagine the future of work and put essential workers at the center of our economic conversations and what it means to build a radically inclusive economy. Karim Webb’s inspiring keynote and Yvonne Wheeler’s powerful labor insights fueled a day packed with bold ideas and innovative thinking. Our panelists—Dr. Fernando Guerra, Saba Waheed, and Jeffery T. D. Wallace —outlined a clear vision for an inclusive economy where every worker has the opportunity to thrive. This summit was just the start of a transformative journey and conversation. Stay tuned for information about upcoming SAFER events and our next State of the Worker Summit next year!

I am deeply inspired by the incredible energy and commitment in the room at our inaugural State of the Worker Summit, hosted by SAFER, the nonprofit affiliate of Somos Group. We gathered private businesses, labor, nonprofit leaders, philanthropy and others to confront the pressing questions of our time: How do we center essential workers—the people who have been historically left out of our conversations—in discussions about our democracy and economic future? How do we create a radically inclusive economy? We started Somos to move beyond outdated paradigms of growth and prosperity, promoting new ideas to elevate those who’ve long been denied economic opportunity. This Summit was the beginning of what we hope will be a transformative journey to fundamentally shift the narrative and create a path forward. Thank you to Karim Webb for delivering a powerful keynote and Yvonne Wheeler for grounding us in the critical role labor must play in this movement. We also heard from a panel that outlined a vision for a radically inclusive economy: Dr. Fernando Guerra, professor of political science at Loyola Marymount University; Saba Waheed, director of the UCLA Labor Center; and Jeffery T. D. Wallace Wallace, president and CEO of LeadersUp. We need bold action, inclusive partnerships, and a blueprint for progress to ensure that every worker—regardless of their background—has the chance to build wealth, security, and a better future.
