Happy Monday! In this week's installation of #womenshistorymonth profile, we shine the spotlight on Katrina Johnston-Zimmerman! Katrina and I go waaaay waaay back (I interned for her at PPS!), and we've shared countless stories of working in the industry over the years and I know I can always count on her to give her honest feedback 😉 If you want to learn more about her work on building feminist cities, join the third volume of the Hive Public Space Brainstorms next week! https://lnkd.in/esVje-b7

For #womenshistorymonth we're going to pay a weekly tribute to the brave and determined women who've helped pave the way for us to become professionals in the #architecture #urbanplanning and #urbandesign fields. We're kicking off with a celebration of Norma Merrick Sklarek on this #internationalwomensday2024 - for more on Norma, check out our instagram! https://lnkd.in/exn8iD7a

We are so excited to see how this pilot by Dark Matter Labs will change the way we manage and activate our #publicspaces ! "Whether it’s a community board or a city-wide parks department, these processes were generally created well before #cities became the increasingly complex and dynamic #places they are today." https://lnkd.in/eUUFrZyu

Our access to #artsandculture are central to the quality of our urban lives. They greatly impact our day-to-day experiences. Imagine living in #NYC, paying some of the highest rents in the country, and not being able to go to your local library on your Sunday off from work (oh wait, that's already a reality). And now possibly losing #placemaking activations in the summertime that many of our cultural institutions lead, or even the access to world-class #exhibitions. Might as well.... live somewhere more #affordable?
For every $1 of city support, cultural institutions generate $8 of economic activity. The budget for cultural affairs in NYC is just .2% of the total city budget — a tiny fraction. Cuts to NYC Department of Cultural Affairs have virtually no impact on the $107 billion City budget, but they deeply affect individual cultural institutions, artists and cultural workers, education programs, and other services we provide. Arts and culture are among the most important reasons why people, their businesses, and their tax dollars are drawn to New York City. There’s little rationale for cutting funding for cultural institutions, which generate revenue and essentially offer no savings. We hope to see a restoration of all proposed cuts. Thanks to Hyperallergic for covering this. https://lnkd.in/ecV4icSY
