Really looking forward to joining the Athens Democracy Forum next week and to this conversation about democracy and philanthropy, in the very place from which both terms originated.
🌐Philanthropic funding for democracy initiatives in the United States has skyrocketed from $4 billion to nearly $7 billion in recent years. This funding has enhanced civic engagement, bolstered political journalism, and expanded access to free and fair elections. But how can we evaluate this impact, and can institutions representing the powerful truly promote democracy? Join Nishant Lalwani, CEO of the International Fund for Public Interest Media, Stefanos Oikonomou, philanthropy consultant and founder of Emergent Suns, and Emily Thielmann, Deputy Director of Democracy Funders Network, as they explore these critical questions at the Athens Democracy Forum 2024. 📅 1-3 October 2024 📍 Athens, Greece 🔗 Save your seat here: https://lnkd.in/ew36z677 #AthensDemocracyForum #Democracy #Philanthropy #CivicEngagement #FreeElections #PublicInterest

Inside Philanthropy recently interviewed the Hellman Foundation's Founding Executive Director, Susan Hirsch, and current Executive Director, Annie U., about our decision to spend down by the end of 2034. The central theme is a belief that moving money into the community in the short-term will have a lasting impact. According to Susan Hirsch, “The idea of legacy matters, and it can take many shapes and forms. Family foundations care about having a lasting impact on the community, and the Hellman board believed they could achieve this by spending down.” #philanthropy #foundations #spenddown #community

Empowering communities to collaboratively shape the future of Jewish education | Founder and Consultant, Gold Learning Solutions | Faculty, MTEI | Instructor, Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion |
What would it look like if funding for Jewish education were in the hands of those closest to the work? How might we do this? Participatory grantmaking! Participatory grantmaking puts support for funding decision-making into the hands of those closest to the work. Community members become central to grant decisions by providing input or participating in the vetting process. To find out how participatory grantmaking intersects with my own field of participatory action research, I reached out to my colleague (and fellow Nashvillian!) Jaré Akchin. During our conversation, Jaré shared that it is vital for donors to feel dedicated to a project and fully understand what its success will look like. With their insider knowledge and experience with their organization’s unique needs, community members taking part in participatory grantmaking deserve that same confidence. The educational organization seeking funding must communicate the “whys” of funding, so that both donors and participating community members trust the organization and can visualize how the project will come to life. This happens through collaborative goal-setting and action, followed by consistent evaluations to assess whether those goals are being met – which sounds quite a bit like participatory action research, if you ask me! Thank you, Jaré, for chatting with me during our stroll through the Frist Art Museum. I’m thrilled to see how our specialties overlap and complement each other. #education #transformingeducation #lifelonglearning
