Working for founders transforming global systems.
About us
Third Sphere works for founders transforming global systems. We’ve made over 100 investments in notable firms like Cove Tool, OneWheel and Bowery Farming. We’re usually a pre-customer investor and offer traditional venture as well as credit finance, along with coaching and connections to over 12,000 customers, investors focused on re-imagining our planet. Our team is ranked in the 99th percentile of climatetech investors on NFX Signal, and Techcrunch named us one of the top 10 VCs founders love the most. We know that climate is about more than carbon—it’s also about force multipliers like asset finance and distribution. We believe the best climate solutions don’t look like climate solutions at all, just better, faster, and cheaper products and services. We prefer rapid deployment that will get us close to 1.5C in warming while upgrading our systems to make them more resilient. But we’ll also look at moonshot opportunities because we know we need a plan B. [VC] A real investment is about more than capital. We invest at the earliest stages, usually pre-customer, stay close to our founders, and work with them from the inception of our relationship so they can build relationships with other founders, investors, and customers. [Credit] Our investments are designed to minimize dilution and preserve ownership for your team without compromising on rapid growth and impact. That’s why, in addition to venture investment, we lend and create asset finance structures like leasing vehicles. [Platform] The Third Sphere platform helps to connect portfolio founders with leading founders, investors, and customers in climatetech. We use it internally to source the most promising investments and to make introductions within our network in order to increase our portfolio’s chances of achieving rapid impact at scale. [History] We probably look familiar. We used to be known as Urban Us. Here's what's changed - https://hubs.li/Q014-Jsb0

Just wrapped up attending an extraordinary session during #ClimateWeek hosted by Third Sphere… “Climate Tech Exits”. Was one of the most insightful, intelligent and future-focused events I have attended in a long long time. The furthest thing from an infomercial you could imagine. The event focused on climate tech market trends, detailed fundraising strategies for founders and as honest an overview of current market conditions as I have heard from an investment firm. What has always impressed me about Third Sphere is how they rarely talk about themselves and always focus on supporting their portfolio companies and the climate tech ecosystem as a whole. Well done Stonly Blue, Shaun Abrahamson, Shilpi Kumar and team!!!

“VCs got really spoiled with SaaS where there is a lot of data and nicely shaped curves that give the illusion of repeatability. Physical things, by contrast, tend to have step functions, which folks really don't like if they're used to nice gentle curves. So you need to do some storytelling about step functions to get people comfortable with them and implement a different discipline around smoothing cash flows. But if you break down the most valuable companies in the world, none of them are just doing software. Most tech companies have some combination of hardware and software.” We spoke with Shaun Abrahamson, co-founder and managing partner of Third Sphere, a venture firm revolutionizing climate tech investing through innovative funding approaches. Third Sphere is developing unique strategies that enable hardware-focused climate startups to scale rapidly, paving the way for impactful climate solutions in sectors such as affordable and clean energy, sustainable cities and communities, and responsible consumption and production. https://lnkd.in/eaHK6Zda #DeepTech #ClimateTech #ClimateChange #Hardware #StartUps #CleanEnergy #Sustainability #VentureCapital

Join us during New York Climate Week. The goal of this session is to explore what exit strategies are emerging for successful climatetech startups. We’ll have some success cases and some cautionary tales. And we’ll do some speed dating to make sure we connect leading founders, investment bankers, PE, corporate development teams and climate VCs. Yes applications and lists are annoying. I'm sorry. We found the biggest space we could at Angelika (yes the one in Soho). We'll try add as many people as FDNY will allow. https://lnkd.in/gHNrii9X

We recently had the honor of co-hosting the Third Sphere Climate Summit, a vibrant gathering of founders and investors from across the country who share a passion for reshaping the venture capital landscape in Tulsa and beyond. The Third Sphere Climate Summit was an opportunity for industry leaders from across the country to collaborate in the Heartland. We aimed to explore the exciting possibilities that lie at the intersection of technology, venture capital, and climate solutions. One of the highlights was the immersive AI workshop led by Stonly Blue and Helena Merk. Attendees had the opportunity to cultivate new technology skills, taking their LLM prompts to the next level. This immersive experience equipped participants with practical knowledge to navigate the evolving AI landscape. The three-day summit was more than just workshops—it was a platform where pivotal discussions unfolded, sparking ideas and paving the way for transformative solutions. Notably, one of the pivotal discussions was ignited when our portfolio company, Bioeutectics’ founder Tomas Silicaro, took the main stage to explain how their green solvent is disrupting the industry. As the summit concluded, we ventured into the historic Greenwood District where we visited the Greenwood Rising museum and heard from Tulsan business owner, Kode Ransom, on the history of Black Wall Street. This visit underpinned conversations around climate justice and the work we are doing to act as change agents in the space through the investments that we make. A heartfelt thank you to our speakers and participants for making this event memorable! A huge thank you to Shaun Abrahamson, Stonly Blue, Shilpi Kumar, Miela Mayer, Ryan Jones, and the entire Third Sphere Team for co-hosting this summit with Will Gray, CFA Vondell J. Burns, and the entire Atento Capital Team. Your efforts made this summit a resounding success. #ThirdSphereClimateSummit #ThirdSphere #VC #BeAtento

Last week Stonly Blue and I lead an AI workflows workshop at the Third Sphere conference in Tulsa and here are just some of the questions we answered: - can you make yourself "more leveraged" by automating tasks? A: yes! - what automations should you build in house versus buy? A: buy if you can - what to look for in AI tools you buy? A: privacy & how they do model training We went into everything from prompt engineering to building lightweight agents with Zapier to some of the work we've been doing at Streamline Climate. 👉 One thing to remember with all of these AI-powered-workflows -- speaking as the founder of one -- is that you are the driver in these interactions. In our case, Streamline's ability to help is extremely limited if you have no grant strategy or ideas for your business. Workflow automations help you double down on something that works. -- Huge shoutout to the wonderful team at Atento Capital (especially Vondell J. Burns 💚) that hosted us, planned tours, and exposed us to the exciting happenings in town (including Tulsa Tough 🚴♀️!!). Lots of dreaming along with action. I wouldn't be surprised if Tulsa, which was once "the oil capital of the world", became the "energy capital of the world." Also shoutout to the Third Sphere team for bringing such a good crew together - Miela Mayer, Shaun Abrahamson, Stonly Blue, Zeev Krieger 🙏 If you want to recreate the workshop, check out Stonly's post here: https://lnkd.in/gU_8aqN5
