THRIVE Peninsula, Inc. reposted this
From 2023 to 2024, CAN has connected our community’s resources to keep 2,724 households housed, healthy, and thriving. This work could not be done without the support of our community and the collaboration with our partner agencies. “It is CAN’s unwavering effort and commitment to serving our families that truly makes a difference. Our clients will journey down a completely different path because of the coordinated efforts that your team makes to ensure their success. For that, I am incredibly grateful and honored to have partnered in some small way with the United Way of the Virginia Peninsula’s Community Assistance Network (CAN).” – Rachel Edwards, Urban Strategies Inc., CAN Referral Partner. Barnhart Crane & Rigging has built generosity into their business model! We are honored to partner with this values-driven company to serve our community.
Last night members of Barnhart Crane & Rigging's Chesapeake Cares team stepped out of the office and into THRIVE Peninsula, Inc.'s Thursday Night Take Over the market, which is designed and laid out to mimic a grocery store. This setup allows clients to feel more welcome and are able to choose items to their liking and dietary needs. This special night allows for working clients and those who cannot visit during regular hours to shop in the evening and ensure they get the food they need. Debbie, Bryan, Tara (Bryan's wife) and I welcomed clients, explained the shopping process, bagged groceries and loaded their vehicles. #giveback #volunteer #barnhartcrane #communitycares #virginia #hamptonroads

It all began with a humble family—a mother, father, and the birth of a child. The story of the Christmas miracle reminds us that family is the origin of the greatest gift of all. As you celebrate this season of giving, will you extend that spirit by supporting families in our community who need it most? For many families we serve, the joy of Christmas—the warmth of being surrounded by loved ones and sharing gifts—feels out of reach. Financial struggles make it hard for parents to create the special memories their children deserve. Imagine being a parent unable to provide the joy of Christmas for your kids. That’s where Let Christmas THRIVE comes in. Since 2020, thanks to your generosity, nearly 1,800 children and their families have experienced the magic of the season. With your support, parents receive holiday gift cards, allowing them to shop for their kids and give them a Christmas to remember. It’s about more than gifts—it’s about restoring dignity, hope, and the true Light of the season. Every dollar you give ensures that families facing hardship can unwrap the joy of Christmas together. Gift cards allow parents to provide the perfect gift for their children—creating memories and moments of love that will last a lifetime. Thank you for helping us keep the spirit of Christmas alive in every home! Donate here: https://lnkd.in/gpPNw6iZ

Volunteer Spotlight: Betty Ann Pagels An active retiree, widow, grandmother of four, and former director of Hilton Presbyterian Preschool, Betty Ann Pagels describes herself as someone who is now able “to fill her life with fun and service.” Betty says busy attending Lifelong Learning classes, ushering at the Ferguson Center, enjoying family and friends, and appreciating “the life God has given” her, Betty Ann makes sure there is time for volunteering at THRIVE. Betty Ann learned about THRIVE while still employed at her preschool and has been a volunteer in The Market for the last three years. Bagging groceries is something Betty Ann knows well how to do as her family owned a small neighborhood grocery store when she was a girl:” I learned from an early age - never put the bananas & cans in the same bag.” Having spent her career giving children “a good, loving start,” Betty Ann likes the idea of helping families meet their basic needs. She enjoys the interaction she has with THRIVE shoppers, as well as the other volunteers, “who inspire and motivate” her. One incident that stands out in Betty’s mind concerns a very distraught woman who was visibly shaking. Betty Ann engaged her in conversation and after that, Betty says, “she seemed much calmer as she headed out to face the rest of the day. What a blessing for me!” Betty sees herself as a prime example of a typical THRIVE volunteer: “all you need is love and a bit of time - no other skills needed.”
