I have imposter syndrome. I will keep saying it loud and proud. Because I believe that talking about Imposter Syndrome is one part of building safer and more productive workplaces. Imposter Syndrome is more prevalent among people of color, women and other underrepresented genders, LGBTQ+ people, and people with disabilities. And it’s NOT because something is wrong with us. We’re not ill. It’s because we more frequently encounter situations at work where we feel less competent, whether due to being made to feel that way in a specific moment, or because we’ve been told since childhood that something isn’t “for us” (and so how could we be good at it?). I recently met a white, seemingly able-bodied, middle aged, man who told me he had never heard of Imposter Syndrome. When I explained it to him, he said he hadn’t experienced it, but could see how others might. I keep talking about Imposter Syndrome for that guy - to help him change his behavior so the rest of us don’t have to feel that way. I’ll talk about it for his organization, so they can change practices to encourage more inclusive behavior. I’ll keep talking about to anyone who feels like an imposter. I see you friend! You’re not broken! You’re in very good company, if I might say so. 😉 I like to talk about this stuff in terms of Imposter Monsters. My Imposter Monster is named Borscht. I’ll keep talking to Borscht about it, every time he shows up. Borscht is fierce. He is my friend. He helps me manage my expectations and anxiety so that when something makes me feel like an imposter, I do it anyway. 📣 Who is cheering you on to do things even when you feel like you aren’t good enough? 👋🏼 I'm Dr. AJ Lauer. I provide leadership coaching, workshops, and consulting to professionals working in STEM. ➡️ To learn more about Imposter Monsters, check out this link (which includes information about my October 29th workshop!): https://lnkd.in/gKyJZXAx #ThriveTogether Thriving Ibis Leadership Solutions #WomenInSTEM #ImposterSyndrome #WomenInTech #DiversityInSTEM #ImposterMonster #Training
