🗳️ This Election Day, let's remember the millions of people across the country who are disenfranchised simply because of past convictions. That's millions of voices silenced, told their input doesn’t count, stripping away both their humanity and their connection to community. Here in Colorado, the only individuals unable to vote are those currently serving a felony sentence. Once they’re released, their right to vote is fully restored. And those awaiting trial or serving time for a misdemeanor never lose their right to vote. Today, we're especially proud of our Programs and Services Manager, Jason Hogan, who cast his vote for the very first time! 👏

We help people who have been incarcerated redefine their futures and breakthrough to a better tomorrow.
About us
We are a 501c3 non-profit organization that prides itself in transforming the lives of people with criminal histories and the community’s perception of the incarcerated population. Our holistic approach includes an in-prison career education program, community engagement, re-entry support, a fair opportunity hiring program, and criminal justice advocacy initiatives. Our in-prison program teaches job readiness and character development through PAIRIN, a research-based tool kit. The last half of the program is focused on the entrepreneurial mindset, in which individuals create a business idea. Our program welcomes community members to come into prison with us as mentors. During a participant’s initial reentry, staff will connect them to wraparound services, as well as to volunteer mentor support from the community. Our support extends past release, staff maintains contact every week for the first month of re-entry. Additionally, our Fair Opportunity Employment project works to recruit fair opportunity partners and develop resources/tools to support in hiring and maintaining fair opportunity talent. Lastly, advocacy is an essential part of working in the criminal justice sector. Through the spread of information and engagement initiates we are advocating for a more fair and productive justice system. We believe in humans, and in our shared humanity because we know that every person deserves to be seen, heard, and challenged to rise above their past to break through to a better tomorrow.

Thank you to KeHE Distributors for hosting Breakthrough at their Boulder office yesterday for a session about the importance of Fair Chance Hiring, and a group activity packing reentry packs for our released participants! KeHE also generously grocery packs stocked with healthy food items for our people to address a major stability factor of access to food during their reentry. We are so grateful to KeHE for their support of Breakthrough, our participants, and their dedication to engaging in Fair Chance Hiring practices! 👏 Thank you to our Board member Harris Rollinger for organizing this amazing event. #reentry #reentrymatters #fairchancehiring

With Election Day fast approaching, ensuring every voice is heard is more critical than ever. Voting rights restoration isn't just a legal requirement—it's key to empowering people and building a more inclusive society. For policymakers and state leaders, prioritizing this issue is essential for promoting civic engagement and successful reintegration. If you are an individual with a criminal conviction, and are unsure whether or not you can vote, we encourage you to check out the Brennan Center for Justice map summarizing state laws on criminal disenfranchisement. It details how these laws vary by state and affect individuals with past criminal convictions. ☑ Ballots in Colorado have been mailed out, and Colorado voters will have the opportunity to decide on Proposition 128, an initiative commonly referred to as “Truth in Sentencing.” This proposal seeks to extend the percentage of time that incarcerated individuals must serve before becoming eligible for parole, increasing the minimum from 75% to 85% for certain violent crimes. Proposition 128 raises important questions regarding its potential impact on the state’s criminal justice system, correctional staffing, financial resources, and overall public safety. 📹 Learn more about the impact that Proposition 128 will have on incarcerated individuals, correctional staff, and the fiscal implications from Breakthrough Executive Director Stacey Putka, LSW. ✍ Also, check out our recent blog post featuring additional context and a helpful fact sheet: https://lnkd.in/g_GVYYpd #Colorado #ColoradoBallot #incarceration #reentrymatters
