Krishna Janmashtami is a joyous Hindu festival commemorating the birth of Lord Krishna, one of the most widely admired of all Hindu deities. Janmashtami is celebrated annually and falls on Aug. 26 this year. Celebrations usually begin with fasting and devotional singing. At midnight, the hour of Krishna’s birth, worshippers break their fast and feast throughout the next day, often with dishes featuring butter, milk and yogurt – some of Krishna’s favorites! Other traditions include dancing, and decorating temples and homes with colorful lights and flowers. To our colleagues who celebrate, Happy Krishna Janmashtami! At our Annual Nursing Celebration, we honor 20 nurses for their outstanding contributions to the profession. In today’s #AwardWinnerWednesday, meet Claudia Chavana, DNP, RN, NPD-BC, CPHQ, NE-BC, Magnet Program Director/NDNQI Site Coordinator at Memorial Hermann Health System Greater Heights Hospital, who says she was motivated to become a nurse after experiencing exceptional care as a new mother.

Celebrated in the fifth month of the Hindu calendar and falling this year on Aug. 19, Raksha Bandan is a festival of brotherhood and sisterhood. In Sanskrit, “raksha” means protection, and “bandhan” means to tie. A popular Raksha Bandhan tradition is for sisters to tie a bracelet made of red and gold on their brother’s wrist as a reminder and symbol of his promise to protect her and her prayers for his happiness. Raksha Bandhan celebrations aren’t limited to biological siblings – it can also be a day to honor sibling-like connections. So, to our brothers and sisters in the nursing profession, we wish you a Happy Raksha Bandhan! Will you join us in telling a nursing colleague today how special they are to you?
