We love when we can share good news about TPS Proud graduates! Congratulations to Dr. Durant, TPS CEO/Superintendent and a proud graduate of Waite High School, for being named last night as the 2024 Urban Educator of the Year at the Council of the Great City Schools’ 68th Annual Fall Conference in Dallas. Dr. Durant was chosen for the nation’s highest honor in urban education leadership from among five finalists from some of the country’s 78 largest urban public-school systems. As this year’s recipient, Dr. Durant receives a $10,000 college scholarship to present to a TPS student. Toledo Public Schools is also thrilled to announce that the second major award given out by the Council went to Mona Al-Hayani, a veteran history teacher at Toledo Early College and a proud graduate of Rogers High School. Ms. Al-Hayani received the 2024 Queen Smith Award at a breakfast this morning in Dallas, accepting on the behalf of all TPS teachers and urban educators across the country. The Council and McGraw-Hill Education present this award each year in the name of the late Queen Smith, whose life represented honor, excellence, and commitment to urban public education. Ms. Al-Hayani receives a $5000 check and plaque honoring her significant contributions to urban education and the children that urban districts serve. We are #TPSProud of Dr. Durant and Ms. Al-Hayani for receiving these major awards. 🟥🟦🟩🟨

At TPS we have some wonderful people on staff that were also students at our schools and we are proud to share a bit about their #TPSProud stories. Alison - Burroughs, Beverly, Byrnedale Jr. High, Bowsher HS graduated 1999 I love seeing how the staff collaborates together and is supportive to each other in my building. We joke that it’s a family business, both my parents retired from TPS, and my dad was also a graduate from Bowsher. #TPSProud

At TPS we have some wonderful people on staff that were also students at our schools and we are proud to share a bit about their #TPSProud stories. Joeseph - Devilbiss Class of 1989 I have a unique story to tell. Want to know? Just ask! : ) The educators at TPS never gave up on me, in spite of my academic struggles. As a classroom teacher and former school administrator, I model the support that was given to me by TPS. I truly believe with hard work, determination, and sacrifice, ANYTHING is possible! #TPSProud

At TPS we have some wonderful people on staff that were also students at our schools and we are proud to share a bit about their #TPSProud stories. Ramsey - Nathan Hale (1980 - 1987), Robinson (1987 - 1989), Macomber-Whitney (1989 - 1991), Start HS (1991 - 1993); Class of 1993 My #TPSProud moments were when I learned that my Start HS administrators named me (at the start of my junior year) as a school role model for incoming freshmen girls to befriend and be their mentor. They also named me, the prestigious high honor, to be the debutante for the Cotillion my senior year. (I have a Cotillion picture to share upon request). I have been fortunate for the learning and career opportunities that TPS has afforded me beginning with my school years, caring staff that mentored and nurtured me as a student, the business block classes I took part in all four years of my high school days, and being a TPS appointed tutor throughout my school years and even as an adult between 2005 - 2010. The TPS ambiance in school gave me drive to go to college, pursue my goals and be successful in my 20 year career in banking as well as preparing me for the success I carried on to have in the career opportunities within TPS as an adult. My experiences have afforded my the ability to grow and cultivate others with positivity and self-empowerment. Yes, I am #TPSProud!

At TPS we have some wonderful people on staff that were also students at our schools and we are proud to share a bit about their #TPSProud stories. Tammy - I attended Fulton, Leverette, McTigue, and Rogers. I graduated in 1993. I am proud to have been a teacher of my former student's son. We both went to Fulton together and we were friends then. It was a pleasure having him as my son. I am also proud to have been a part of the Teacher Leadership program and selected to attend the AFT conference and asked to be a presenter! I'm proud to give back to my community. Prior to leaving Toledo, I was a substitute teacher for TPS. I left Toledo in 2005, went to North Carolina to teach, then went to Georgia to teach, but made it back home. I'm proud to have earned a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership and to work again in Toledo. #TPSProud
