  • Our Metlakatla office staff wore orange today and sent this message as a reminder. “Orange shirt day acknowledges that residential schools were a damaging part of our history. Wearing an orange shirt is a national movement to recognize the experience of those who went to Indian residential schools, to honour them, and show a collective commitment to ensure that #everychildmatters🧡🧡🧡” #TongassFCU #creditunions #SoutheastStrong

It started with a very grumpy member threatening to close her account, to one of the best visits I’ve had with a member!💯 The mail is tricky in southeast Alaska and our statement vendor is in the lower 48. This grumpy and worried member told me over the phone she was going to pull her money out on Monday because she still hadn’t received her monthly statement for August. I told her I’d like to meet her when she comes in and asked what time she would be at the credit union. She said she heard the weather was going to turn and maybe she wouldn’t come down after all. She uses a cane and has 45 stairs to navigate when she leaves her home. I offered to bring her a printed statement and introduce her to our assistant branch manager, Sabrina, so she wouldn’t have to leave her house. She liked that idea.😊 When I called to make sure she was okay with us stopping by, she said, “Yes! I’ve been waiting for you!” What a wonderful time we had! We worked out our business problem and then got a tour. She had a “museum” of artifacts she had dug up on beaches and old community sites all over southeast Alaska! We talked about the good old days of early Ketchikan and shared stories. I took pictures and told her I would be posting them and she was okay with that. She has lived in her home for 80 years - her whole life. It was the “cabin” for the first house that was built by her family on the side of a mountain.⛰️🌲 Pioneer members are some of my favorites. I love it when something difficult turns into a blessing for everyone! I couldn’t have started the week off better! ❤️ Tongass Federal Credit Union #TongassFCU #SoutheastStrong #Alaska #membersmattermost #creditunionstories #creditunions #HometownStories

  • Cell phone and internet outages have greatly impacted the entire Sitka community. Even with systems down, our Tongass team is committed to ensuring access for our members. Today we had team members in Haines, Petersburg, and Metlakatla on the (landline) phones buddying up with our Sitka team so members were able to withdraw cash before the holiday weekend. We are so proud and grateful for our team! They are always willing to jump in and help their sister communities here in Southeast. #TongassFCU #SoutheastStrong #Alaska #PeopleHelpingPeople #creditunions

  • Sunday August 25, 2024 was a sobering day after a landslide tore a deep scar in the mountainside directly behind our main office in Ketchikan. We are grateful that our employees are safe. Our branch is open and we are serving members including offering emergency loans and assistance. Our hearts are with the family of the city employee who lost his life, Sean Griffin, husband and father of four. For two days we have listened to helicopters overhead carrying experts gathering information to assess safety and clean up. Yesterday we lined the sidewalk in front of our branch to honor Sean Griffin as a local processional took his body through town for an air transport. We have a donation account set up for his family at Tongass Federal Credit Union. We would like to thank the credit union network for the many offers of assistance we have received. It is a deep honor to be part of this incredible industry. Thank you for sharing this story Frank Diekmann. #TongassFCU #CreditUnions #SoutheastStrong #KetchikanStrong #Alaska

There were 1,657 de Havilland Beaver aircraft produced between 1947 and 1967. What is amazing is there are over 900 of them still flying! It is said that the de Havilland Beaver is arguably the best bush plane ever built. I’ve had the pleasure of flying on three of these champions of aviation history in the last two weeks. Yesterday I had a front row seat on my way to Angoon, a small Alaska Native community, on Admiralty Island, in Southeast Alaska. Angoon is beautiful! The people love and care about their community and their way of life. And Angoon is very likely the next location for one of our Tongass Federal Credit Union community microsites. #TongassFCU #SoutheastStrong #creditunion #aviation

  • Posted by our President/CEO, Helen Mickel last week after a trip to our branch on the only Native Indian Reserve in Alaska, in Metlakatla. Note her comment that since Tongass Federal Credit Union began serving the community, resident median credit scores went up 70 points! 🎊 Credit unions make a difference in a community! We have tons of stories to share. When you can put a number on it, some say that is even more impactful. 💯 #TongassFCU #creditunions #peoplehelpingpeople #SoutheastStrong

Fly out, ferry back. Thursday’s work commute in beautiful Southeast Alaska. At Tongass Federal Credit Union, It is our privilege and honor to serve the only Native Indian Reserve in Alaska. Tongass Federal Credit Union is committed to providing credit union services for the METLAKATLA INDIAN COMMUNITY. Back in 2005 after a large national bank left this remote, island community of 1,400 residents, Tongass FCU answered their call to serve the members of the Annette Island Indian Reserve. In 2012 we demonstrated our long term commitment to the community by building a $1.1 million branch Metlakatla. Since Tongass Federal Credit Union has been in Metlakatla, resident credit scores have increased 70 points! #creditunionempowerment It was so good to visit this week. My first time back since the COVID-19 pandemic. Metlakatla has a piece of my ❤️ #southeastAlaska #TongassFCU #financialeducation #creditunions #indigenous #AlaskaNative #IndianCountry #iwillbebacksoon #blessed #honored
