It was a great week in Garner. We celebrated receiving $8.5 million from the federal government to help with construction of phase 1 of the Yeargan Park project on East Garner Road. U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland visited the park site to learn more about plans for the project. Later, Town staff and Mayor Gupton joined Secretary Haaland as well as Gov. Roy Cooper and U.S. Rep. Wiley Nickel at a press event at Raleigh's Walnut Creek Wetland Center (Raleigh received another $8.6 million for its Smoky Hollow Park project). The goal of the federal Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership, which provided the funding, is to ensure that underserved communities have access to quality park and recreational amenities. Some background on the Yeargan Park project: The Town acquired the 72.49-acre Yeargan property in 2019, dedicating approximately 64 acres to be used for the development of a public park. Phase 1 of the park development project focuses on 47+ acres closest to East Garner Road. This phase will include construction of four multi-use sports fields, an inclusive playground and a large picnic shelter with restrooms. Two of the multi-use sports fields will be artificial turf; two will be natural grass. All four fields will be lighted. Phase 1 also includes parking, a multi-use path, utility work (water, sewer, electric, stormwater) as well as improvements to East Garner Road to facilitate access to the site. The Town is currently in the process of wrapping up the design phase, having reached the 90 percent construction documents stage. We expect to reach 100 completion of construction documents in September or October, with bidding out of the project to occur later this fall. The Town of Garner's Parks, Recreation & Cultural Resources Department is hiring a Parks & Greenways Planning Manager. The main responsibilities for the position include (but are not limited to) serving as subject matter expert in all parks capital projects; preparing or coordinating the production of plans and construction documents; providing oversight to park system improvements; representing the department in the Town’s Technical Review Committee and coordinating the PRCR Advisory Committee’s role in the fee-in-lieu process; tracking and updating the PRCR Comprehensive Master Plan; leading community engagement to update existing parks master plans to leverage funding; and identifying and applying for grants to leverage Town capital funds.
