Lexie entered foster care following a failed international adoption. She was in seven foster homes before her 8th grade teacher opened her home to her. "I got connected to Treehouse in 8th grade. When I was first paired with my Education Specialist, Mary, I told her the only thing I really wanted in life was to be independent," Lexie told us. "When Mary told me about the Driver’s Assistance program, which would make it possible to take driver’s education and get my license, I knew it was my chance—no longer relying on others, getting to travel and go where I want when I want. I started driver’s education at 15 years old, which is the soonest I was allowed to. I didn’t want to wait any longer." The Treehouse Store distributes hundreds of thousands of items every year and that wouldn't be possible without the help of our volunteers. Thanks, D.A. Davidson, for choosing to spend D.A. Davidson Day with us and sort through some our general donations! #Volunteering #TreehouseFosterCare #DADavidsonDay

Michael shied away from the help of his Treehouse Education Specialist until his senior year. He felt that "if people saw me around Treehouse, the staff there or others, I would be seen as somebody who’s not normal, like a charity case. I just wanted to be seen as a normal kid." That changed during his senior year when he made the decision to graduate, so his Education Specialist talked to counselors, got him a tutor and helped him get credits he needed to graduate on time. "I had told myself that graduation wasn’t going to happen for me." His message to youth in foster care now? "Instead of feeling ashamed, think of Treehouse as something that’s going to help you in the future. It’s a tool that’s going to help you become more independent, to help sharpen the tools in your shed so you’re not depending on other things as you get older." All month long we are sharing the stories of youth in foster care for Foster Youth Voice Month! Lupe is a foster care alumni and current Launch Success participant. She is a fierce advocate for youth in foster care receiving the support they need to be successful as they transition out of the system. She told us that for her, "surviving the system meant becoming a people pleaser. I was that shy little girl who just wanted to be liked. You learn not to express yourself because if you do, you basically get reprimanded. Never in a million years did I think I could stand up for myself. Once I learned that I have that power though, it changed everything. It opens more doors for you." Read more of her story and how she learned to advocate for herself thanks to the support of her Treehouse Launch Success coach. https://lnkd.in/grhYCK3Y #TreehouseFosterCare #FosterYouthVoiceMonth #FosterCare
