🚨 Floodwaters Damage Homes in New Mexico 🚨 Over the weekend, KOAT 7 reported on flash flooding that damaged homes in #Albuquerque, New Mexico. One of the featured homeowners in the segment shared her growing concerns about the increasing frequency of flood events and her desire to mitigate her flood risk, saying she doesn't "want to leave this house. We've been here since 1999." At True Flood Risk, we analyzed her property and found that, even though it is in a FEMA X flood zone, it is at high risk of flooding due to its First Floor Height (FFH) of 0.58 feet, the frequency of flooding events, the number of #NFIP flood claims in the area, and its proximity to the nearest 1% flood zone. Given these risks, True Flood Risk strongly recommends flood insurance as a minimum precaution, and for the long-term horizon, house raising is the optimal solution. We are here to help communities better understand and mitigate their flood risks. Reach out to learn more about your property's true flood risk. 🌊🏠 #FloodRisk #FloodMitigation #AlbuquerqueFloods #ClimateResilience #DisasterPreparedness https://lnkd.in/edyf5yCM

Recently, we joined a panel at the annual National Flood Association conference where we had the opportunity to feature our detailed community risk assessment of Jefferson Parish, Louisiana—a community that has undergone a remarkable transformation in flood resilience post #HurricaneKatrina. Our patented AI-powered platform analyzed over 128,000 commercial and residential properties in less than 5 hours to provide a comprehensive view of current and future flood risks down to the property level. This case study not only illustrates that even with substantial investments in critical infrastructure, a residual flood risk still exists for the majority of properties, but it also offers detailed actionable data for strategic decision-making to improve resilience. This data enables local floodplain managers and resilience officers to drill down on specific properties, streets, and areas that need insurance and mitigation, identify the most at-risk properties, and support reporting and analytics needed to earn FEMA NFIP CRS credits towards: Public Information Series: Enhancing community engagement and awareness about flood risks. Mapping and Regulations: Assisting in the development of more accurate flood maps and regulations. Flood Damage Reduction Activities: Guiding targeted infrastructure and community planning efforts. Flood Preparedness: Providing comprehensive strategies that improve readiness and response to flooding events. Our community risk assessments, available on-demand and in real-time for over 20,000 communities in the United States and thousands more globally, offer the data insights needed to make informed decisions that enhance resilience and protect people and property. 📩 Please reach out for a full copy of the Jefferson Parish Community Risk Assessment or to nominate your community for our next monthly feature! #FloodRiskManagement #ClimateChange #RiskAssessment #JeffersonParish #FEMA #NFIP #Flood #CRS #GeolocationIntelligence #Floodplainmanagement

More focus is shifting towards the intersection of climate change and banking. Bloomberg News recent article underscores the pressing need for banks to confront the 'physical risks' tied to climate change. It's imperative to consider individual property or asset-level risk, whether it's primary or secondary perils, to fully grasp the impact and implications of natural catastrophes, climate change, and ultimately, optimal mitigation strategies. When it comes to flood risk, understanding building-level first floor height is paramount to know at what water depth a particular structure might flood. Recent storms wreaked havoc in Tallahassee late Thursday, April 11 to Friday, April 12, with Godby High School bearing a significant blow. Built in 1966, the school faced substantial flooding, leaving only three buildings unscathed. According to reports by the Tallahassee Democrat, the National Weather Service recorded nearly 9 inches of rainfall in some North Florida areas overnight. In an interview with the Tallahassee Democrat, Superintendent Rocky Hanna expressed deep concern, stating, 'Right now, the campus is not occupiable. I started my career at Godby 36 years ago, and I've never seen anything like this. We have an inch of standing water in a large number of classrooms.' At True Flood Risk, our flood risk assessment for the school sheds light on the gravity of the situation. The main classroom building, with a first floor height (#FFH) of 0.54 feet, is at high risk of flooding, situated just 357 feet away from a FEMA high-risk flood zone, despite being in an X #floodzone. Conversely, the nearby school auditorium, constructed in 1996, boasts a lower flood risk than the original school buildings with an FFH of 2.97 feet. In light of these latest flooding events happening daily somewhere in this world, it's imperative that the collective 'we'—including property owners, renters, governments, insurers, and financial institutions—work together to take proactive measures addressing the impact of climate change on our infrastructure from prioritizing changes to building codes, securing funding for adaptation measures, and ensuring the resilience of our communities. #WhenEveryInchMatters #ClimateChange #Flood #Adaptation

Torrential storms brought nearly a foot of rain to the Hawaiian island of #Kauai within a 12 hour period late Thursday through Friday morning, causing widespread flash flooding and road closures. Citizen science and journalism played a crucial role in providing real-time updates, like this video from Jay Ishill, included in a Hawaii News Now segment capturing flooding scenes like the Texaco gas station in Kaloa. True Flood Risk data reveals that this convenient store building structure faces a high risk of flooding, with a first-floor height (FFH) of only 0.52 ft and its location in a FEMA high-risk AE #flood zone. Obtaining flood insurance or elevating the property is the optimal short and long term mitigation strategy given this property's flood risk.
