Only you are in charge of your career. While thoughtful companies can play a role in helping you develop, building time to invest in yourself is essential. Great thoughts by Mark Murphy on things to work into your schedule.

Really interesting to see momentum around the protection of workers' off hours time. In advance of this happening in your country, small shifts in when exactly you choose to hit "send" on any given bit of communication may change the expectations you set with your stakeholders. This can have a positive impact on your and others' well being, and compounds as more people mimic your behavior. What do you think?
Australia is the latest country to give workers the 'right to disconnect' after hours

The top performers in the world rest STRATEGICALLY. Try this ten-minute exercise to fight burnout: I love this breakdown by exec coach and conscious leadership coach Dave Kashen breaking down these 4 zones of performance at work: Performance Zone Survival Zone Burnout Zone Renewal Zone Kashen recommends trying to stay between your performance and renewal zones. Professional athletes are incredible at balancing between these zones. They know that can give it their all in a performance because they know how to recover and recuperate before their next race, game, etc. When they transition to other professional domains, they are successful because they continue to prioritize the balance between these two zones. After 20+ years in business, I’m only now learning how to build a balance between renewal and performance. When I was early in my career, I didn’t understand the difference between these four zones so I was constantly getting stuck in the burnout and survival zones. HOW TO IDENTIFY YOUR RENEWAL ZONE At Inflection retreats, often people want to talk about burnout and how to create a better life for themselves. To help them identify their values and what matters to them in their daily life, I walk them through this ten-minute exercise: Spend ten minutes writing down the answer to this question: “If you had no constraints, what’s your ideal Tuesday from the moment you wake up until the moment you go to sleep?” This exercise helps people identify their values and what can keep them between the performance and renewal zones. I renew by taking walks, doing midday workouts, having great nutrition and taking breaks from screens. I also intentionally surround myself with people who remind me to renew. If you can’t determine what you need for renewal, ask the people around you who love you because they probably know. Takeaway Figure out what brings you renewal and schedule those rest activities into your day. Treat the renewals just as sacredly as the performances. Rest wisely. Rest more. Whether it be working out, journaling, meditating or investing in ourselves and our careers - building new habits is hard. Here's a good article that talks a bit about gaming ourselves into doing so. As with most things, it starts with goals (Set Your Intentions), and we recommend both starting small and forgiving yourself for imperfection...

As much as leadership defines the framework for any organization's culture, the people play a major role in how it actually works. Tiny shifts in your behavior can have meaningful, positive impact on others and have a surprising long term impact on your day-to-day quality of life.

Great insights in this article on leadership skills. It is good to note that these principles don't exclusively apply to formal leadership positions. They are equally vital for anyone looking to navigate and manage their career effectively. Some ways we see applying the leadership suggestions from the article to managing your own career include: - Shaping a Vision for Your Career: Just as leaders shape visions for their teams, individuals should envision their career path, setting clear and inspiring goals for themselves. - Translating Vision into Strategy: Identifying actionable steps and priorities is as important for your career progression as it is in leadership. - Continuous Learning and Self-Improvement: Embrace 'learn-by-doing' experiences and continuous reflection on your actions, just as successful leaders do. - Fostering Innovation in Your Approach: Stay open to innovation and learning, whether it's picking up new skills, adapting to new roles, or finding creative solutions to career challenges. - Leading Yourself: Know your strengths and areas for development. Manage your work-life balance to ensure personal growth alongside professional advancements. 😀 What we love most is the last of their key points - leading oneself. Knowing, improving, and managing oneself is the cornerstone of a successful and fulfilling career.

Flip the Script to Interview Better - The Questions You Ask Are Often as Important as Your Answers to Theirs Most people rehearse answers to common questions, but one way to differentiate (especially with more senior interviewers) is to arrive with really good, curiosity-driven questions. Some tips below: 🔍 Research Deeply: Try to understand the company’s mission, its products, and the role you’re applying for. 🤔 Form Questions that Genuinely Interest You: Let your research lead you to your curiosity. In your process, there will be some things that you are draw to. Focus your questions on your areas here. Not curious yet? Do more research until you are. 👀 Your questions reveal your insight: By asking questions on topics that genuinely interest you, your intuition will be on display, and you'll also showcase your enthusiasm for the company and role. 🔄 Not only do good questions showcase your horsepower as a candidate, you’ll get answers that either make you more or less excited about the company/position. 3 small investments in your career this week 📈 : Short (5 min): Read this article from the The Wall Street Journal that highlights gaps in self-awareness: While geared towards managers, there is a good amount to be gained from understanding how companies think about employees out of touch with their value. If you aren’t getting the feedback you need, see our prior post on getting feedback from reluctant bosses here: https://lnkd.in/ecu9XHxU Medium (15 min): Before you head off for the weekend, spend some time writing down your priorities for next week. This doesn’t need to be a massive list building exercise, just a short “These are the things I know I need to get done next week”. Having that list to return to on Monday might just help you enjoy your weekend b/c anything that might keep you up at night is already there for you when you wake up Monday morning 🙂 Medium + (30 min): Watch the episode “Personality” in Netflix’s series on “The Mind, Explained”. It provides a good balance of insight into how people are actually geared differently, but also how people might change/improve.
