Last week we launched the UK's first ever secure school - Oasis Restore. Oasis Restore is a revolution in the criminal justice system, offering therapeutic, integrated, and bespoke support for the young people in our care. It is rooted in a restorative rather than punitive approach to justice which seeks to explore not what's 'wrong' with our young people but what's happened to them. Oasis Restore will be home to up to 49 children at any one time and every young person will be enrolled in formal education or training and encouraged into further study or secure employment on release. Our young people will also be trained in workshops designed to give them the qualifications necessary to go straight into employment or further study after release. Oasis Restore is based on international research which shows how smaller settings, high-quality education, and healthcare provision, plus a specialised workforce of teachers and youth workers are the key to successfully turning around the lives of young people in custody. Edwards Argar MP, Minister of State for Prisons, who attended the launch along with NHS England, said, "What I have seen today is genuinely the first of its kind in this country." Steve Chalke, founder of Oasis, said, “You can’t hope to help or heal someone by hurting them. Oasis Restore represents a revolution in youth justice – a revolution that’s built on both science and experience." Justice involved children and young people have not always had the opportunities to develop these competencies due to a range of disadvantages. This research explores the extent to which identified competencies can be developed through specially designed active games. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected to assess the bespoke games’ effectiveness and tested in seven European countries (Italy, Spain, Portugal, Hungary, Romania, Turkey, UK). A total of 326 young people participated across 17 settings with 105 educators trained in the methodology. The findings suggest that participation in the active games had demonstrable impact, both overall, and for the specific identified competencies. These findings have currency for developing policy which promote positive outcomes on release back into the community, across a range of national contexts.
