Beyond statistics that provide us with a macro picture of prevalence, domestic violence, gender-based violence, and femicide are personal - even intimate - phenomena that develop and unravel organically in different kinds of relationships, families, communities, and societies. Human complexity and that of intrapersonal and interpersonal relations makes it hard to find blanket solutions. However, education in its widest sense - from formal schooling to all the mass media available to us - can be a powerful and effective resource to shape and change social beliefs, attitudes, and behaviour. An unwavering commitment to a 'pedagogy of the heart' (to quote Paulo Freire) would help ensure that we, our children, and generations to come never take human dignity, human rights and the meaning of love for granted.
