Texas faces a rising suicide crisis, with firearms involved in ⅔ of cases. We’ve partnered with NAMI Texas to explore this issue in our joint article, "Firearm Safety Meets Mental Health: A Path to Preventing Suicide." Together, we can build a safer, healthier future by promoting mental health care, safe storage laws, and more. This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we must confront a heartbreaking reality: firearms are the primary weapon used in domestic violence homicides. In 2023, more Texas victims were killed with a gun than by any other means. Worse, at least 20 perpetrators were prohibited possessors who should never have had access to firearms. It’s time to strengthen background checks and ensure our firearm prohibition laws are enforced across Texas. Let’s protect survivors before it’s too late. Take action today by emailing your lawmakers: https://lnkd.in/gZvg4623 #DVAM #DisarmAbusers #GunViolence #TXLege #EndGunViolence

Laws prohibiting abusers from owning guns exist for a reason — to protect victims of domestic violence. But in Texas, many counties fail to enforce them properly. Right now, a convicted abuser or someone served with a protective order can still possess a gun due to inconsistent protocols for firearm removal and the lack of expanded background checks. Last year, 20 individuals who committed domestic violence shootings were identified as prohibited possessors. We can’t stand by and let this continue. Survivors deserve real protection. 📢 Join us in urging lawmakers and counties across Texas to adopt consistent, enforceable protocols to disarm domestic abusers: https://lnkd.in/gZvg4623 #EndGunViolence #DVAM #DisarmAbusers #GunSafetyNow

In 2024, Texas saw a 15% decline in gun violence homicides compared to last year, according to a new report from the Center for American Progress. This progress is a result of increased investments in violence prevention strategies and the tireless efforts of advocates across the state. But our work isn’t finished. Texas Gun Sense Executive Director Nicole Golden reminds us, "While we’ve made incredible strides, the Texas Legislature needs to go further. Policies like raising the age to 21 to purchase semi-automatic rifles and requiring secure gun storage will help keep our schools, homes, and communities safe." Let’s keep working together to make Texas a leader in gun violence prevention. Read our full statement: https://lnkd.in/gnaHt4Nh #GunSafety #PublicSafety #TexasGunSense #ViolencePrevention
