Today, we said farewell to the Japanese Exchange Program students and faculty!👋 During their visit to Birmingham, the dental students from Japan's Meikai University and Asahi University were able to experience America and a taste of Alabama, while also being able to shadow UAB dental students while they were performing clinic duties as part of the exchange program here at UAB SOD. They also had the opportunity to meet some of our fantastic alumni, such as Dr. Shaheen Upton, who welcomed them to her dental office! Next year, the D4 students and faculty who have been selected to participate in the program will have the amazing opportunity to visit these same dental students in their home country of Japan. We were so glad to have these amazing guests and we hope that success follows them in all their future endeavors.

Yesterday, the AAWD hosted their annual "Bake with Love, Rise Above" Bake Off competition in Greer Lounge! 🍰 This school-wide event was held in recognition of domestic violence awareness month. All proceeds from the event will be donated to One Place Metro Alabama Family Justice Center, a local non-profit organization that seeks to provide services to victims and survivors of both domestic and sexual violence. Thanks to all the bakers and tasters who attended, the AAWD was able to raise over $630! Way to go! Judges included Dean Geurs and Drs. Shandra Coble, Francesca Velardi, and Ramzi Abou-Arraj. Meet Cherylin Whitehead, one of our Patient Accounts Representatives! 👋 Cherylin is one of the first people you see when you enter the school, and as always, she greets everyone with her contagious smile and positive attitude. Her role is providing the best patient care, starting from registering patients all they way to making sure insurance claims have been filed after service, processing payments, and handling other business-related issues. Cherylin sums up her experience at UAB SOD, "Thus far, SOD has been an amazing experience! My experience in the Business Office is the best! It's the heart of the school and having support from my team, faculty & even the students keep me going!" She was also recently recognized for her excellence in patient service. The recognition came after a patient reached out to the Dean's Office to express how impressed he has been with the care and patience he sees Cherilyn provide patients and visitors of the school. He noted that all while, she maintains a positive attitude and a smile. Thank you for all that you do, Cherylin!

Following the event, our guests were treated to a nice lunch and tour of the school. We are so excited to have the opportunity to partner with these universities for a great exchange program!
The American Student Dental Association (ASDA) reminded the aspiring dentists at UAB SOD to take time for self-healing by designating this past September as Wellness Month. ASDA kicked off the month with a special Wellness Week filled with activities, events and giveaways. The goal was to provide information about the importance of personal wellness, while also bringing students together for fun and comradery. “Dental students have to stay on top of classes and clinic while also setting aside time to study. In the midst of all that, it’s sometimes hard to take time for yourself,” says Maggie Mitchell, Class of 2026 dental student and Wellness Chair for the Alabama Chapter of the ASDA. “It’s important to prioritize wellness in all our schedules, because without a balance, we’ll burn out.” Learn more about the week here: https://buff.ly/3Y7NjWT
Dr. Peter Waite, Professor Emeritus and Former Chair of the Department of Oral Surgery, was recently featured in a Washington Post article highlighting his heroic volunteer work as part of the Grand Teton National Park’s Wildlife Brigade. The volunteer group aims to protect both animals and humans, a growing challenge given the millions of people who visit every year. Farahnaz Fahimipour, D.M.D., Ph.D., M.S., an assistant professor in UAB's Department of Periodontology, was one of 15 emerging leaders in periodontics selected from across the country to participate in LEAD (Leadership, Engagement, Action, and Development), an exclusive leadership development program hosted by the American Academy of Periodontology.
