Jessie Abrego - Bonilla, a doctoral student at the University of Arkansas in the Environmental Dynamics program, developed a passion for climate change from a young age after experiencing the 1998 El Niño and a solar eclipse in Panama. This early curiosity led her to pursue research on the effects of climate change in her home country. Bonilla was recently selected to join the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Roster of Experts, where she will contribute technical expertise on greenhouse gas inventories, climate policy, and adaptation strategies. Her doctoral research focuses on climate change’s impact on precipitation along Panama’s Pacific Coast, incorporating skills in climatology, GIS, statistics, and hydrology. After completing her PhD, Bonilla plans to return to Panama to help improve the country's resilience to climate change, particularly in forecasting droughts and protecting food chains. Bonilla credits the University of Arkansas for providing an interdisciplinary education, research opportunities, and mentorship that has empowered her to pursue her dream of addressing global climate challenges. When Adnan Alrubaye was contacted by the American Councils for International Education to host a Ukrainian scholar at the University of Arkansas, Alrubaye didn't hesitate to say yes. He welcomed Vasyl Koziy, a department head from Bila Tserkva National Agrarian University, through the BridgeUSA Ukrainian Academic Fellows Program. This initiative connects Ukrainian and U.S. scholars for long-term collaboration in research, teaching, and course development. Koziy is auditing classes, conducting research, and exploring collaboration opportunities at the U of A, particularly in microbiology, physiology, and animal welfare. "I find so many commonalities between myself and him," Alrubaye said. "As a war survivor myself, I want to bring both worlds together here in a country that welcomes everyone. Our goal is to have him leave our campus with the best experience possible, and he and I are talking about multiple follow-up projects once he returns to Ukraine." The program ultimately seeks to support Ukraine's recovery and reconstruction through educational partnerships. To learn more, visit ➡ https://lnkd.in/gjiWKuic
