🌍 With the recruitment year coming to a close, I am so grateful to have been able to travel around the world and recruit so many future Wildcats to the University of Arizona International. My recent trip to Pakistan and Nepal was incredibly eye-opening, humbling, and filled with so many meaningful connections. It was inspiring to meet such talented and passionate students eager to pursue their academic journeys in the U.S. despite any hurdles they may encounter at home. Each school visit, College Fair, and conversation was memorable, and I’m excited to see these future leaders thrive at our university. 🇵🇰 🇳🇵 In the Spring, I visited South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan, where each country offered unique perspectives and vibrant cultures. Engaging with prospective students and sharing the opportunities available at the University of Arizona was truly rewarding here as well. 🇰🇷 🇯🇵 🇹🇼 As we look forward to welcoming these new Wildcats, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who shared their stories and aspirations with me. Together, we are building a global community that fosters innovation, collaboration, and success. Last week, University of Arizona International hosted 41 university students from Chihuahua, Sonora, and UNAM for the 6th edition of Women in STEM. This was an amazing group of students, representing 26 institutions of higher education, who spent a week being inspired by some of the University of Arizona’s top researchers in multiple fields. UofA Mexico Initiatives would like to thank all of our campus partners who made this program a resounding success and to our partners in Mexico, Instituto de Innovación y Competitividad de Chihuahua, coecyt Sonora and UNAM for their continued confidence in the University of Arizona. North-West University / Noordwes-Universiteit (NWU), one of South Africa’s leading higher education institutions, recently sent a team of delegates to the University of Arizona to explore areas of collaboration and deepen the partnership between the two universities. Deputy Vice Chancellor and Vice Principal of NWU Linda Du Plessis, alongside other prominent NWU officials, met with University of Arizona President Dr. Suresh Garimella, Interim Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Dr. Ron Marx, Vice President for University of Arizona International and Dean of International Education Dr. Jenny Lee, Senior Associate Director for International Education and Director of Africa and Caribbean Programs Rudo Sandy, and U of A faculty from various disciplines. Highlights included: Dean of the University of Arizona - College of Humanities Alain-Philippe Durand and Associate Dean for Research and Program Innovation Ken S. McAllister met with NWU Humanities leaders, including Executive Dean Dumi Moyo, to discuss the interdisciplinary approach that defines U of A’s curriculum. Discussions around the establishment of an Arizona Abroad Location at NWU, which would be the first such site in Africa. U of A’s Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health and NWU’s Health Sciences department are in discussions to collaborate on a bachelor’s program in Wellness and Health Promotion Practice. Great to meet with CNRS CEO Antoine Petit today. Our institutions’ partnership has accomplished much in the past few years, and we have great potential to achieve even more in key areas of impact for both our nations and the world.

Vice President for University of Arizona International and Dean of International Education Dr. Jenny Lee, alongside a team of University of Arizona delegates, recently traveled to Kazakhstan to engage in high-level discussions with M. Kozybayev North Kazakhstan State University leadership about joint research initiatives and plans for future program development. The visit also featured the grand opening of two newly constructed dormitory buildings, which are set to enhance the student experience and support the growing dual-degree program between the two institutions. Joining Dr. Lee on the trip was Vice President for the Division of Agriculture, Life and Veterinary Sciences, and Cooperative Extension, and the Charles-Sander Dean of the University of Arizona - College of Agriculture, Life & Environmental Sciences Dr. Shane Burgess, Senior Director of Central and South Asia Affairs Ricky M. Over 1,300 students had the opportunity to explore their international education opportunities as this year's Study Abroad Fair. Despite the 100+ degree heat, students spent time chatting with program leads, international partners, previous program participants, and Study Abroad staff. Representatives from over 50 programs tabled at the fair, providing students with the chance to compare programs and consider how these opportunities align with their academic, personal, and professional goals. Last Friday, I spent the day with the Vannessa M. Kramer, Lauren Findlow and the amazing students from the University of Arizona, Eller College of Management’s BNAD 419 course on International Business in Ambos Nogales, exploring the vital international trade that takes place at the border in Nogales. The students began the day visiting the Mariposa Port of Entry, getting a look behind the scenes at how CBP manages the dual responsibility of facilitating trade and commerce while maintaining security at the MPOE. Building on that, our second visit was with Allison Moore and Georgina Felix Berrueto of the Fresh Produce Association of the Americas at one of the FPAA’s members, GROWER ALLIANCE LLC, where Walter Palazuelos gave an excellent talk on how the produce brokers in Nogales, AZ are a critical link in providing the U.S. and Canadian markets with fresh fruits and vegetables grown in Mexico throughout the year. It was an excellent visit for the students - all expressed much appreciation for their time and knowledge to Oscar Trochez and the amazing team at the Mariposa Port of Entry; Allison and Georgina of the FPAA and Walter of Grower Allilance!

In September, Sampoerna University celebrated the graduation of 99 students who received dual degrees from Sampoerna and the University of Arizona. The ceremony, held at Sampoerna Strategic Square in Jakarta, underscores the growing success of the dual-degree programs offered through the U of A’s global microcampus initiative. President of Sampoerna University, Dr. Marshall Schott, and University of Arizona Location Manager Tri Tjahjono were in attendance to congratulate the graduates and celebrate their achievements. This Fall has been an exciting and productive one for the University of Arizona in India! I had the pleasure of traveling alongside Salil Gupta to meet with several esteemed institutions and partners to discuss our ongoing initiatives in the region. We had impactful conversations with Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, International Relations Cell, IIT Hyderabad, EducationUSA, IIE Research, Evaluation, and Learning, Malla Reddy University Hyderabad, the U.S. Consulate General Mumbai as well as the U.S. CONSULATE GENERAL HYDERABAD exploring opportunities for student and faculty exchanges, joint research, and pathway programs. Additionally, our time in Bengaluru was well spent connecting with school advisors, sharing insights about how the University of Arizona provides a supportive learning environment for students pursuing undergraduate admissions in the U.S. A special thank you to INTO University Partnerships, IDP Education Ltd and ApplyBoard-your partnerships have been invaluable in empowering Indian students to achieve their higher education goals. The University of Arizona continues to set new benchmarks for global engagement, welcoming a cohort of international students from a record-breaking 141 countries in the 2023-2024 academic year. This year marks the most globally diverse student body in the institution’s history. With a 28% increase in total international enrollment across all campuses and modalities, the extended international student population now reaches 7,247, further emphasizing the university’s commitment to providing diverse, high-quality education to students worldwide.
