Los Angeles Unified School District's Black Student Achievement Plan, designed to provide targeted support for struggling Black students, is under attack. A federal civil rights complaint from a Virginia conservative group has prompted LAUSD to eliminate race as a factor in determining which children will be helped, undermining the original design and purpose of the plan. This legal action reflects a broader conservative strategy impacting schools, intensifying culture-war divisions in school districts nationwide. Efforts under this agenda aim to limit teaching about race and Black experiences, eliminate LGBTQ+ content from school libraries and curricula, and mandate that schools notify parents if a student wishes to change their name, pronouns, or gender presentation, undermining diversity, inclusion, and overall educational equity for students. Supporters of BSAP are outraged and demand the program be maintained in its original form. Tyrone Howard, along with teachers, BSAP staff, and high school students, discussed the benefits and supports that BSAP provides to Black youth. CTS Faculty Co-Director Lucrecia Santibañez was recently quoted in a CalMatters article discussing newly released K-12 Smarter Balanced reading and math scores in California. The number of students meeting standards still remains below pre-pandemic levels, but nearly all student groups are showing progress. Dr. Santibañez underscores the importance of maintaining optimism, particularly given the varied impacts of the pandemic on different student demographics, and celebrates the progress made, especially among Black, Latinx, and low-income students. CTS Faculty Co-Director Tyrone Howard was recently featured in Scripps News discussing the significant impact of the Supreme Court’s ruling on affirmative action and its consequences for college admissions and race-based scholarships. Many institutions have reported a noticeable decline in Black student enrollment, raising concerns about equity and access to higher education. Howard emphasizes the urgent need for intentional recruitment efforts to address these trends, urging institutions to engage more deeply with communities to ensure that underrepresented students know they are welcome and capable of succeeding in higher education. In fostering these connections, we can help create a more inclusive academic environment. Our 2023 report on the critical role of campus support programs for foster youth was featured in an Inside Higher Ed article discussing California’s Middle Class Scholarship (MCS) for Foster Youth program, which was evaluated in a new report from the Urban Institute. While the scholarship has provided college access to many foster youth, these students often face barriers to eligibility due to academic progress requirements and part-time enrollment. Our report, “Foster(ing) Youth in the California State University: Understanding the Vital Role of Campus Support Programs,” underscores the inadequacy of financial support for these students and the lack of institutional resources, emphasizing the need for more comprehensive aid and support to improve enrollment and graduation rates for foster youth. 📊 Our new REACH Network Baseline Report reveals persistent discipline disparities across CA school sites, disproportionately affecting students based on race, disability status, gender, and socioeconomic background. It is crucial that we address these inequities that impact primarily nonaffluent, historically marginalized communities. The journey toward true equity is far from over, and the findings from the Baseline Report are a powerful reminder of the work still ahead in our education system. Our key findings unpack how: 📝The pandemic disrupted education and highlighted troubling trends as schools reopened. Pre-existing patterns quickly returned. 👦🏾Black students continue to be overrepresented in suspension rates, a reality we must confront head-on. 👩🏽🤝👨🏿With diverse communities, including significant Latinx representation, it’s essential that we address challenges like chronic absenteeism to ensure every student has a fair chance for success in their future. Read more about our key findings in the executive summary or baseline report at: https://lnkd.in/gCy262Su. Are you interested in alternative discipline practices in schools? 🎉HAPPY HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH 🎉 From September 15 through October 15, we celebrate the incredible contributions of Hispanic and Latinx students and educators who inspire and drive change in our schools and communities. Their diverse perspectives and rich cultural backgrounds not only enhance our educational landscape but also foster a more inclusive environment for all learners. Let’s take this opportunity to highlight the importance of representation in education. We recognize the importance and impact of Hispanic and Latinx educational research, especially those that amplify minority voices. By supporting diverse narratives and fostering an inclusive curriculum, we can inspire future generations to pursue their dreams and excel in their studies. Together, let’s champion initiatives that promote equity, encourage collaboration, create pathways for success, and commit to building educational spaces where every student feels valued and empowered. “Reunirse es un comienzo; mantenerse juntos es el progreso; trabajar juntos es el éxito.” (Coming together is a beginning; staying together is progress; working together is success.) 💪❤️ #HispanicHeritageMonth #DiversityInEducation #InspireChange #CelebrateDiversity #CulturalPride
