Last month, orthopaedic surgeon Kristofer Jones, MD, threw out the first pitch for the Los Angeles Dodgers' Black Heritage Night. Dr. Jones is the head team physician for the Los Angeles Lakers and will be the lead physician for both the men’s and women’s U.S. basketball teams this summer in Paris. “It means a lot to be here on Black Heritage Night, with my two boys, who are two little Black boys who love to play sports and who look up to athletes,” said Dr. Jones. He noted that Black physicians make up less than 1% of the orthopaedic surgery specialty, “so to be able to serve as a role model for Black children who may want to go into medicine, it feels to me a little bit like the way Jackie Robinson took it upon himself to be a role model for Black people who wanted to play baseball.” Read more about his experience: https://ucla.in/4cHFI7a

As he tipped his hat to every parent and child in the play zone, country singer Garth Brooks visited the revamped play space at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital, which his foundation Teammates for Kids supported 🌟 These play zones reduce the amount of medical attention children need to recover, Brooks says, and shortens their hospital stays, “because what kids do best is being kids, and this is what happens (here).” 💙 🎸 Learn more about his visit: https://bit.ly/3xuaMbM

UCLA Health Pride Network, a systemwide employee and training resource umbrella group whose goal is to empower the system’s LGBTQ+ employees and trainees, creates a sense of connectivity. The network comprises 450 LGBTQ+ associates and allies, who also plan community outreach events around annual PRIDE celebrations. The network is not only important for staff and faculty, but also for patients who come to the system’s clinics. “It’s about letting our patients know we’ve got their back, we’re there to support them, and they are in a safe place,” says Troy Ratcliff, regional float manager.
