Thank you for visiting us, NASA Ames Research Center and NASA Johnson Space Center! Patients on our oncology unit were thrilled to meet astronaut Dr. Yvonne Cagle, former astronaut Kenneth “Taco” Cockrell and flight surgeon Dr. Joe Schmid! They stopped by to visit with children and give out pins, stickers and signed photos. 🚀👩🚀

Our patients had two “Giant” surprises! San Francisco Giants players Mike Yastrzemski, Jung Hoo Lee and Tristan Beck visited our San Francisco hospital, and the team’s newly appointed president of baseball ops (and former catcher) Buster Posey also stopped by last week! They signed baseball cards and hats, creating unforgettable memories for our patients and staff! Thank you, Giants!

We're proud to be one of just three sites nationwide—and the only site on the West Coast—to offer gene therapy for children with the metabolic disorder Hurler syndrome. “Engaging in this research opens the door to new therapies that may benefit more patients and also may be more beneficial than a standard transplant," Dr. Sandhya Kharbanda says.

Aaron visits our Oakland hospital every three months for sickle cell disease treatment and loves hanging out with his favorite nurse practitioner, Kimberly! This #SickleCellAwarenessMonth, he received a special sickle-cell-themed NBA basketball as part of an awareness campaign for the painful, inherited blood disorder. Aaron loves playing basketball, baseball and video games and his favorite subject at school is science! He wants to be an orthopedic surgeon when he grows up!
