Calling all UIC faculty! UICentre, UIC’s collaborative drug discovery center, is pleased to announce its 3rd call for proposals under the Launch program.    UICentre aims to support projects focused on finding new drug-like small molecules, which can comprise robust assay development, high throughput screening (HTS), and/or hit-to-lead medicinal chemistry projects. Proposed target validation studies using synthetic chemical probes are also considered receptive to this RFA.   Any UIC faculty member can apply. Awards can range from $10K-$50K. The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences hosted the LAS Faculty Research Symposium: From Atoms to Astronomy at The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). This day-long event featured speakers from UIC and other nationally recognized institutions, such as Fermilab and MIT, to name a few. The speakers shared research on matter over 25 length scales, interacted with UIC students in a poster session, and encouraged questions from the audience to spark discussions throughout the day. UIC researchers found that herpes infection through the nose can lead to anxiety, motor impairment and cognitive issues. The research is the first to show that, by exploiting a cellular enzyme, the virus can produce behavioral symptoms. At UIC, students gain early entry to the quantum engineering field through research, entrepreneurial and educational opportunities. The College of Engineering is adding new courses and faculty to give students the foundational knowledge they need to participate in the #quantum computing workforce. UIC has a unique role in the growing “quantum prairie” of the Midwest, where universities and companies advance new technologies built on the strange behavior of atoms and even smaller particles. This work could lead to huge advances in #computing, medical imaging, #communication and other fields.
