Last week, Unexpected Virtual Tours and Training helped us discover America’s untold stories on the Juneteenth: Emancipation Virtual Tour. This celebratory and thoughtful interactive experience honored the history and traditions of the national holiday, including hidden stories of amazing Black women who rose to power in the Reconstruction Era, important sites in Chicago, Illinois, such as Ida B. Wells' home and monument, and trivia focused on the nationalization of soul food.

A deep thank you to Unexpected Virtual Tours and Training (UVTT) for the Juneteenth session yesterday, and to our Responsive Black ERG for sponsoring the event. UVTT's session was deeply engaging, informative, and moving - and hands down the most impactful one hour I've ever experienced on any topic. Here are a few highlights that really stood out to me - - At the beginning, one of our guides asked us to share in the chat the names of Black individuals, past and present, we'd most like to meet. Within minutes, we had a very long list of incredibly inspiring figures, highlighting the enormously positive impact so many Black Americans have had on our country. - One guide live-streamed and commentated from Fort Monroe, where enslaved individuals first arrived and later where many escaped to gain their freedom. It's hard not to get emotional seeing Fort Monroe today and hearing its powerful stories. - I also appreciated how our guides walked us through the evolution of Emancipation monuments. They started with the controversial Emancipation Memorial in Lincoln Park on Capitol Hill (1876), depicting Abraham Lincoln with a hand over a kneeling liberated slave. While Lincoln's contributions were crucial, this depiction misses the significant role Black Americans played in their own emancipation. Our guides then showed us the Texas African American History Memorial in Austin (erected in 2016) which tells a much more holistic, inspiring story. Thank you UVTT and our Black ERG for helping us better understand Juneteenth as a day of celebration of independence as well as its broader historical context. I'm appreciative of the myriad positive steps forward, but also recognize there's still much work to be done.

This morning, our Responsive Black ERG hosted a Juneteenth celebration, featuring an enriching program from Unexpected Virtual Tours. The session was a deeply engaging and immersive experience, providing us with invaluable historical context and reflections on significant events. Highlights included: 🛤 Harriet Tubman’s courageous 19 journeys to the South, where she freed 300 people via the Underground Railroad. ✍ The drafting and passing of the Emancipation Proclamation. 🙌 The story of how three enslaved individuals gained their freedom at Fort Monroe in 1861, setting a precedent for thousands more. 📖 Insights into the location of Emancipation statues across the US, notably the Texas African American History Memorial, which incorporates rich storytelling. 🎉 Tips on how to celebrate Juneteenth this year with a traditional BBQ and other festive foods. While we learned a lot today, there’s still so much more that we can learn about Juneteenth and its importance in our past, present and future. Thank you, Unexpected Virtual Tours and Training, for hosting such a meaningful event. What a great way to kick off this week as we honor and celebrate #Juneteenth. Check out some of the pics from our virtual gathering!
