Union Station draws tourists from all over the world who marvel at her Grand Hall's 95-foot ceiling, three 3,500-pound chandeliers and the six-foot wide clock hanging in her central arch. She wakes up early and stays up late to host business meetings, civic events, weddings and celebrations of all sorts. And that’s just the beginning. Just as you could 100 years ago, you can still catch the train at Union Station's AMTRAK stop and head out across the country. You'll also find traveling exhibits produced by the Smithsonian, National Geographic and other international organizations, a Planetarium, an interactive science center Science City, and a vibrant Theater District featuring the region's biggest movie screen, live theatre, and so much more. Tonight, Union Station shines in blue in celebration of Saturday morning's Kansas City Marathon. We were honored to once again host the Marathon's Health and Fitness Expo presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City and to welcome runners for pre-race packet pick up. Tonight, Union Station honors the life and legacy of Donald J. Hall Sr, with our exterior building lighting dimmed and the iconic Hallmark Crown emblem along our east roofline, facing Hallmark’s campus. The former Hallmark CEO and Kansas City civic leader passed away at home on Sunday. Son of Hallmark founder J.C. Hall, Don joined the company at 17 as an assistant salesman and eventually led the company his father founded in 1910. Don and his wife, Adele - personally and through the Hall Family Foundation - demonstrated their commitment to Kansas City through their profound philanthropic dedication that transformed countless local institutions, including Union Station. Starting with Don’s strong support and guiding hand in the 1996 Bi-State initiative that saved Union Station from certain demise to his most recent Honorary Chair position of Science City’s historic Early Learning expansion (substantially funded by the Hall Family Foundation), his passion for our history and place in the community was unwavering and will live on for generations to come. Earlier today, Union Station officials hosted a small, private dedication with the family of Lisa Lopez-Galvan to unveil her recently added portrait to the “Welcome All” Mural in Union Station’s Ramón Murguía Visitor Entrance. The mural – created by local Chicano artist Chico Sierra – was originally unveiled in the fall of 2023 and portrays everyday people and community leaders who truly embody a “Welcome All” attitude and way of life. The “Welcome All” mural highlights iconic Kansas City landmarks and people who have and continue making an impact on the community by truly living with a welcome all perspective. Elizabeth “Lisa” Lopez-Galvan was that kind of person. Lisa was a pillar in the Latino community. Her voice could be heard far and wide on local radio station KKFI, where she hosted her Tejano radio show. Born in Kansas City to Heriberto and Ana Margot Lopez, she grew up in the Westside neighborhood and remained a devoted resident of the Kansas City area throughout her life.
