📢 How Fear of Being ‘Primaried’ Is Breaking the Senate In 2024, 87% of U.S. House races were decided in primaries by just 7% of eligible voters. With such a small portion of the electorate shaping elections, many elected officials feel pressure to focus on primary voters rather than representing the broader public. States like Alaska have implemented open, all-candidate primaries, which allow elections to be determined by a majority of voters. This system permits leaders like Senator Lisa Murkowski to represent all of their constituents and vote according to their conscience, without being concerned about primary threats. Open primaries give voters more voice, choice, and power. They also improve representation, accountability, and results in our government.

Pennsylvania lawmakers are renewing efforts to open primaries to 1.3 million independent voters. State Sens. Dan Laughlin (R-49) and Lisa Boscola (R-18) are reintroducing legislation to end closed primaries—a system that disproportionately t excludes thousands of taxpayers, including veterans, young voters, and communities of color from participating in elections they help fund.
