Railways Overwhelmed: ILA Strike Impacting Your Supply Chain Although short-lived, the ILA strike has severely disrupted the East Coast supply chain, forcing a massive volume of cargo to be rerouted to the West Coast. This influx has overwhelmed the West Coast rail network, leading to significant delays of up to 2 weeks at the Port of Los Angeles. Need a faster solution? UCM offers transloading and trucking services from the Port of Los Angeles to help you bypass these delays. Let's work together to keep your supply chain moving smoothly! #supplychain #logistics #ILAstrike #shipping #freightforwarding #transportation #supplychainmanagement #UCM

We participated in a great event in Houston this week - RE+ Texas - with the Jones Logistics team and the Jones Power group. What we came back with is an even deeper understanding of the opportunities that present themselves in the renewable energy market and even more ways we can service this sector’s diverse logistics needs. On a broader note, we recognize customers always wants to know “What’s In It For Me?” We often kid the radio station they always are listening to must be WII-FM. But it’s understandable, since the market is one where opportunities don’t usually fall into one’s lap, we all need to dig to find where our opportunities may lie. With that in mind, here is a recap of the international market conditions, as we see them: The markets are chaotic, rates are spiking, space is scarce, carriers are blanking/voiding sailings, there’s potential for a Canadian rail strike and the Suez remains a hot spot with vessels as targets. Not to mention new tariffs on some imported goods and political discussions of future tariffs that could further impact some important and sensitive trades. So, we recognize our customers are dealing in difficult and sometimes confusing times. Many importers have signed service contracts with carriers, and while that does normally provide a level of security, carriers are very strictly enforcing commitments. That means many importers are facing really challenging times when it comes to finding ways to move the entirety of their cargo. Basically, the word on the street is that today’s conditions are like a smaller version of our past’s COVID-type environment. In summary: Rates are spiking up and service options haven’t been good. As we talk to customers and prospects, we remain aware that they are likely struggling on the import side of their house. Our goal is to be a help to them by acknowledging the situation is real, staying on top of market dynamics, sharing our knowledge and showing how UCM has the experience and network to provide creative solutions they may never have considered or thought were available to them. Even during COVID, we successfully moved cargo for our customers and new opportunities came our way as we created “wins” for customers – showing them what could be in it for them. There is always a new way to achieve an objective, and customers come to UCM because we find those ways. In this very difficult market, we are here for you. Please let us know where we can help you or support you in providing value to your customers.

Our expertise in moving breakbulk cargo has put 370 metric tons of electric project hardware on a RoRo vessel en route from Europe to the US. This door-to-door move of 8 separate units originated in Austria and these components will head to their destination in Glendale, CA via Port Hueneme, where they are scheduled to arrive mid-June. Our own Hank Harden and Toni Sikes are shepherding this move every step of the way, and you can put our global network of experts to work for your next projects, too. We look forward to hearing from you!
