Calling it an "experiment" on "the opportunities and threats that the development of artificial intelligence bring," the Polish online station OFF Radio Krakow on Monday rolled out a new format in which three virtual hosts, created using AI technology, deliver news content prepared by "real journalists who use artificial intelligence tools" to generate the text. Despite assurances that the use of AI-generated journalists is merely a temporary experiment, alarms were set off across the country. Deputy Polish Prime Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski, who serves as the country's minister of digital affairs, voiced skepticism about the station's move in a social media post on Wednesday as station officials tried to convince the public that no full-time journalists had lost their jobs. https://lnkd.in/emU4sR5t

U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and his counterparts from Japan and South Korea met Friday, and at the forefront of their discussions was North Korean troops that could end up fighting alongside Russia in its invasion of Ukraine. North Korea sent at least 3,000 troops to eastern Russia this month. Sullivan and his counterparts "expressed grave concern over troop deployments by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea to Russia, potentially for use on the battlefield against Ukraine.” The trio called on Russia and North Korea "to cease these actions.” https://lnkd.in/eKXHndsK

The U.S. State Department’s PEACE Through Music Award is part of the State Department's Global Music Diplomacy Initiative launched by Secretary Antony Blinken in 2023. The award honors an American music industry artist, professional or group that has "played an invaluable role in cross-cultural exchanges and whose work advances peace and mutual understanding globally." On Friday, the State Department announced the recipient of the award for 2024: Dolly Parton. The State Department said in a statement, "An icon and force across the music industry, having reached audiences at home and abroad for generations -- with future generations to engage still -- Parton embodies all that the PEACE Through Music Award represents: understanding, peace, inclusion, and unity. While her selection as this year's awardee is grounded in her music and public persona, Parton's commitment to serving others is unparalleled." In accepting the award, Parton asked, "Is that not what we're all looking for? A little peace. We all want it. Some of us, all around this whole world can only dream about it. But as people, we all deserve it." https://lnkd.in/egk_xY2A

The European Space Agency is leading the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna mission, and NASA is partnering on the project, as well. LISA is designed to use lasers to measure minute changes in a triangular configuration of spacecraft positioned in space. That work will detect gravitational waves, such as those caused when black holes merge and when other cosmic events occur. https://lnkd.in/gjidYwNg

Historically, the whip-poor-will has served as an iconic bird of American horror, from the works of Washington Irving, H.P. Lovecraft, Stephen King and more. But in today’s Voices, a cultural sociologist notes a current erasure of whip-poor-wills from similar modern works and how this cultural diminishment of whip-poor-wills mirrors the species' actual decline in the wild. After all, conservationists estimate that eastern whip-poor-will populations have declined by about 70% since the 1970s. https://lnkd.in/ghM6cz-6

North Korea recently said that it will cut off roads and railways connected to South Korea and will fortify its southern border along the DMZ. The view of the DMZ as a formal southern border of the DPRK is a shift by the North Korean government that comes in the wake of the announcement by Kim Jong Un earlier this year that North Korea would be abandoning the goal of a unified Korea. Experts and government agencies around the world are left with the task of determining whether North Korea's abandonment of unification is genuine, or if this is consistent with the greater picture of erratic decision-making and saber-rattling that has become characteristic of its leadership. https://lnkd.in/g6bmvMQV

Iowa’s Supreme Court is considering a case that could affect eminent domain rights in that state. Landowner Kent Kasischke refused to allow Summit Carbon Solutions surveyors onto his property to survey for its pipeline project. That project, approved by the Iowa Utilities Commission, would allow Summit to build nearly 700 miles of CO2 pipeline across the state. The state's high court held a hearing last week over the appeal of a district court decision, and now a decision could come at any time before the court's term ends in June. https://lnkd.in/guudA6YY

Evacuating might seem like the obvious move when a major hurricane is bearing down on your region, but that choice is not always as easy as it may seem. Evacuating from a hurricane requires money, planning, the ability to leave and, importantly, a belief that evacuating is better than staying put. A research associate at the Natural Hazards Center at University of Colorado Boulder examined years of research on what motivates people to leave or seek shelter during hurricanes. She found three main reasons for why people stay instead of leave. https://lnkd.in/eKAim2XA

A March survey by independent pollster PRRI found that 68% of voters will take LGBTQ rights into consideration at the polls, and fully 30% stated that they would vote only for a candidate who shares their views on the issue. So, where do Kamala Harris and Donald Trump stand on LGBTQ rights? A legal scholar who has written extensively on the history of LGBTQ rights says the clearest indication of how a politician will act once in office is not what they promise on the campaign trail but what they have done in the past. Here are their records: https://lnkd.in/ePq6EDjg

A professor of geography at the University of South Carolina says Helene was by far the deadliest inland hurricane on record, exceeding Hurricane Agnes in 1972. Some hurricanes are remembered for their wind damage or rainfall, professor Cary Mock writes in today’s Voices. Others, he says, are remembered for their coastal flooding. But Hurricane Helene was a stew of all of that and more, and its near-record-breaking size, storm surge, winds and rainfall together turned it into an almost unimaginable disaster that stretched more than 500 miles inland from the Florida coast. Helene's devastation, Mock also says, is an important reminder that hurricanes can't be judged by wind speed alone. https://lnkd.in/e9whi5ZU
