I recently surpassed the 1000-case milestone for #MAKO total knees in approximately five years. Throughout this journey, I've continuously refined my approach and leveraged technology to enhance patient care as my practice expanded. In my perspective, robotic technology, in some capacity, is poised to become a permanent fixture in joint replacement surgery.
For the majority of my primary knee replacements, I adopt a minimally invasive #subvastus approach. This technique has proven to expedite my patients' recovery, particularly in the initial weeks compared to more traditional incisions. The MAKO system excels in procedures executed with this approach, showcasing its remarkable strengths. The inclusion of haptic feedback and defined boundaries significantly simplifies challenging subvastus cases.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated teams at the three facilities where I conduct robotic surgeries (Unity Physicians Hospital, Allied Physician Surgery Center and St. Joseph Regional Medical Center) and my local representatives from Stryker / Stryker Joint Replacement with a special acknowledgement to Ted Uelk, Adam Stahl, Benjamin Bournay and Jenelle MacKenzie. These individuals are the unsung heroes, consistently ensuring that cases are prepared and the day unfolds seamlessly, even as early as 4 am.
A special appreciation goes to my wife for her enduring support, managing the role of a stay-at-home mom, and enabling me to pursue my endeavors. Her understanding and commitment are truly invaluable. Additionally, I am grateful for the thoughtful commemorative gift marking the milestone of the thousandth case.
I eagerly anticipate the next 1000 cases and the continued collaborative efforts that lie ahead. Thank you to everyone involved for their unwavering commitment and contributions to the success of these endeavors.
