Colton Hubbard is a soft-spoken teenager, a down-to-earth kid who always puts others first. He’s also a huge basketball fan, managing the Brandywine High School team that won the Division 3 state championship this year. But since he was 7, Colton has been in and out of hospitals after an MRI led to the discovery of a benign tumor that surgery was expected to cure. Unfortunately, he would be among a small minority of kids whose tumor returned. Three years after his initial surgery, scans showed multiple tumors in Colton’s brain and spreading down the length of his spinal cord. “It’s an extremely rare case,” said his mom, Mandie Hubbard, a registered nurse at Memorial Hospital. “There’s like 200 cases a year and there’s no cure for it, so treatment is kind of like a guessing game.” Colton will be running the bases running the bases tonight at Four Winds Field as part of our Home Run for Life partnership with the South Bend Cubs. Horizon Transport will match every dollar donated by fans for Beacon Children’s Hospital. Read more about Colton in this inspiring WNDU interview: https://bit.ly/3YffJQB “We’re very grateful to have Beacon Children’s Hospital 20 minutes from home, to be able to get the care he needs and still be able to go home every night,” Mandie said. “To be so close to home and the staff that have gotten to know him, gotten to know our family. It’s just great that we have that here―essentially in our back yard.” To support the care and work for incredible kids like Colton: https://bit.ly/4cesJKT

Rebecca Davis was enjoying a cruise with her husband last October when she realized something was very wrong. While walking to a port to do some sightseeing, she needed to pause and rest her legs several times. Back home, she started noticing mundane tasks become more challenging. “I got to where I would go down my basement steps to the laundry room, back up the steps and then had to sit down and take a break because my legs were tired,” she said. For someone who doesn’t like to sit still, this fatigue was alarming. Rebecca had a pretty good idea of what might be wrong, because her mother had been treated for peripheral artery disease (PAD). Test results confirmed her suspicions: blockages were reducing blood flow to both her legs. Dr. Howard Wiarda, interventional cardiologist, Beacon Medical Group Interventional Radiology and Vascular Specialists, stepped in with a solution and today, Rebecca is back to living her best life. For our Elkhart General Hospital patients and visitors: The City of Elkhart will continue a paving project on South West Boulevard tomorrow, Friday, July 26, and on Monday, July 29. Expect delays, follow workers’ instructions and any detour signage during this time as traffic will be restricted to one side of South West Boulevard when traveling south between West Lexington Avenue to Arcade Avenue. Arcade Avenue will be open to the hospital’s main entrance and visitor parking lot, so consider approaching the campus from the east using either Bridge Street or East Boulevard. The Emergency Department entrance off of East Boulevard will remain open. Please allow extra time to arrive for appointments at the hospital and drive carefully around the campus.

Her interest in medicine began with sciences in grade school. By high school, biology was her favorite subject, came easily and she began considering a career in medicine. Then, a personal experience solidified Laura’s decision. “One summer day I was violently ill and admitted to Memorial Hospital for immediate blood transfusions and other tests. I witnessed firsthand how the nurses and doctors worked urgently to save my life,” she says, adding, “I was overwhelmed with the care I got, and thought I could do the same for someone else someday.” Laura’s sister, an internal medicine doctor, also influenced her direction. She went to Indiana University South Bend for her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and then earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Family Nurse Practitioner, Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, IN. “I’ve always had an interest in the cardiovascular system and how the heart works. I’m excited for a chance to learn and potentially affect my patients’ lives positively,” she says. “I take care of people during their most vulnerable times and nurse them to health.” Learn more at https://lnkd.in/gn_bYPsr
