About us

Our Story It began over a century ago, when a small group of university graduates gathered together in order to establish a meeting place of their own. The State of Illinois granted them a charter in 1887. Their goal was simple – to foster an appreciation of literature and the arts and to create an environment where they, their guests and all future members could draw upon sustaining values of a common educational experience. The founders represented a variety of higher education institutions, bringing together unique backgrounds and interests. Among these founding members were Cyrus Hall McCormick Jr., President of International Harvester, Frederic Clay Bartlett, an avant-garde painter and art collector, and William Eliot Furness, an abolitionist credited with creating one of the Union Army's first regiments of free and former slaves. The Club first rented rooms in the Henning Speed building at 125 N. Dearborn Street and later purchased 116 N. Dearborn Street which provided accommodations for members during the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. In 1906, the present property became available and the Club made plans to move to its final (and current) home at 76 E. Monroe Street, just as Michigan Avenue was becoming a major cultural hub for Chicago. As vanguards of the Chicago School of Architecture, members and architects William Holabird and Martin Roche presented designs for the new Clubhouse. Although the members had been expecting designs in the style of the adjacent Gage buildings, which Holabird and Roche also designed, the pair returned with a shocking Gothic "skyscraper." Their design became the first of its kind, and the completed building was occupied by the membership on April 3, 1909. Who We Are We are a private members' club that is committed to fostering an appreciation of literature and the arts. We are member-owned, Board-driven and are proud to provide a space where members can explore many intellectual and cultural pursuits. College or universit

Community Builder & Engagement Expert | Strategic Planning, Revenue Generation, Team Management

I continue to be so proud of everything the Division of Culture & Community at the University Club of Chicago continues to achieve. A huge shout out to the Queen of Programming Rina Ranalli and her team. As well as Amy Carr and Leslie Bradberry in Communications and Membership. Y’all wow me from afar with everything you do at this storied institution! 💕

In advance of her speech at the Democratic National Convention, House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (and distinguished reciprocal club member) visited the Club yesterday for an engaging discussion with CNN's David Axelrod about her latest book, "The Art of Power," and her role in this eventful election season.

Tech Founder | Customer Advocate | Empathetic Leader

Shari Neal Williams and I attended a great lunch conversation between Nancy Pelosi and David Axelrod at the University Club of Chicago. Pelosi, discussing her book "The Art of Power," took us through her incredible journey—from housewife to House Speaker. Her story is a powerful reminder that you have to be prepared to take a punch and give a punch… "all for the children." Pelosi shared how the Gospel of John deeply influenced her faith and politics and how she navigated the competitive yet not mean-spirited political landscape of her early career. She recounted the challenges she faced as one of only 23 women in the House when she first arrived, contrasting them with the 94 Democratic women serving today. Pelosi shared a memorable moment when she considered running for leadership but was told it wasn't her turn, as the men before her had been waiting a long time. Her response? "Have they waited 200 years?" Pelosi's resilience and ability to balance compassion with tenacity—what David Axelrod described as part "den mother" and part "ruthless enforcer"—was fascinating. She emphasized that having a woman run for president is just the icing on the cake; the real progress lies in the persistent push for equality and representation. Her message was clear: "Know your power. Make a decision to get it done and take every step necessary to achieve it." #Leadership #TheArtOfPower

    Build a business you love to lead ⚡️ Live a Sparked Life™ | Biz Coach | Speaker | Facilitator 🧠 💜 ⚛️ 👩💻 🤖 🚀 📈💰 🎉

Witnessing History in Real Time... Yesterday I had the incredible honor of seeing Nancy Pelosi speak at the University Club of Chicago. For all the history she’s not only lived through —but MADE— her presence is warm, personable, and sharp with witticism. It’s easy to see how she’s been such an effective leader and “get sh!t done” whipper of votes. Pelosi’s trailblazing role in politics has paved the way for more women to step into positions of power, breaking barriers and redefining leadership. At Sprk’d, we’re on a mission to do the same for women in business — leveling the playing field and ensuring that more women lead the way forward in every industry. #WomenInLeadership #WomenInBusiness #NancyPelosi #liveasparkedlife #growthgetters #entrepreneurlife

  • We kicked off DNC Week on a high note with a compelling conversation featuring Heidi Heitkamp, Director of the University of Chicago Institute of Politics, and statistician and FiveThirtyEight founder Nate Silver. They delved into a range of topics, from Silver’s latest book, "On the Edge," to how analyzing baseball players can offer insights into presidential elections. Don't miss tomorrow’s DNC event, where we'll hear from Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi and David Axelrod!

Recently made it back to the Big Apple, unsurprisingly only ate pizza. Stayed at The Yale Club of New York City while in town for a few meetings through my membership at the University Club of Chicago and wanted to show some #ReciprocalClubLove. The location was perfect as I could walk back from my morning meeting and grab a quick bite to eat on the roof before heading back out. You could say I’d give it two thumbs up.

  • Last night, we hosted our Club Unplugged Concert featuring Thomas Gabriel, the grandson of the legendary Johnny Cash. This special event was a fundraiser for our Foundation, which provides life-changing scholarships for staff and the children of staff. It's a full-circle moment since Johnny Cash himself helped send one of our members, Karen Hale, to college. It was only fitting that Karen, along with Jane Gately, Katina Panagopoulos, Allyson Pooley and Sarah Tarpy worked together to bring Thomas to the Club. He delivered a heartfelt performance, sharing stories of his personal struggles and triumphs between songs. We extend our gratitude to everyone who attended and continues to support this wonderful cause at our Club.
