As part of an ongoing series, Becker's Healthcare asked C-suite executives from hospitals and health systems across the U.S. who are speaking at Becker's Healthcare 15th Annual Meeting to share their team's evolving roles and skills. Mehdi H. Shishehbor, DO, MPH, PhD, President of UH Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute and Angela and James Hambrick Chair in Innovation, shared his thoughts on how his leadership team will evolve over the next two years: “We will continue the ongoing and crucial work of actively diversifying our leadership. Emphasizing the key University Hospitals value of "belonging," we're working within a framework of diversity, equity and inclusion to welcome individuals from various backgrounds and experiences. Additionally, we will redouble efforts in our various service lines to more directly engage nursing leadership. New and fresh insights from a more diverse group of individuals in leadership roles will help us tackle some of our most formidable challenges, one of the most serious being staff and physician burnout. Understanding this threat is paramount in running any service line or healthcare facility, and we need creative thinking and thinkers who promote engagement and help boost retention. AI shows promise as a tool to reduce administrative burden on clinicians, so engaging those with the knowledge and experience to leverage it and other alternatives is essential. When we can more fully address our challenges, we can devote more attention to why we are here in the first place: to take care of our communities and patients.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/ejqpT6Qd #belonging #diversity #equity #leadership #healthcareleadership #engagement #creativethinking

UH System Chief Nurse Executive Michelle Hereford, Ethel Morikis Endowed Chair in Nursing Leadership, was named to Crain's Cleveland Business 2024 list of Notable Black Leaders. According to Crain’s, “the 50+ people honored represent all industries and communities: C-suite executives and investors handling multimillion-dollar budgets and billion-dollar deals, advisers helping our neighbors pursue higher education and secure social services, attorneys leading law firms and advocates leading the way toward change. From magnates to mentors, they’re working to enrich their companies, our communities and our city.” Michelle is responsible for the overall management of nursing operations, professional practice, education, professional development, research and clinical services for University Hospitals. She also leads the Nursing Leadership Council, an advisory group that draws upon the experiences of nurses to provide strategic guidance and help foster philanthropic support and community engagement. Crain’s noted that one of Michelle’s biggest career wins in the last five years was creating the UH Future Nurse Academy, which promotes career readiness for high school students interested in a nursing career. The two-week program includes visits to nursing schools that partnered with UH in this initiative – Ursuline College, Kent State University and Cuyahoga Community College. A stunning 428 applicants from every corner of Northeast Ohio applied for the initial class of 26 students. This year, UH expanded the Academy to three locations, partnering with additional schools, tripling the number of area high school participants. Prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death among American men. Jonathan Shoag, MD, a board-certified urologist at UH Urologic Institute, is working to better understand how aging-related diseases such as prostate cancer develop – and to find better therapies. A focus of his work is understanding why some people develop diseases of aging, while others do not. “We are looking to understand the mechanisms underlying disease predisposition, as well as what factors modify this process, using the latest advances in DNA sequencing technologies,” he says. “The National Institutes of Health has awarded my group, along with collaborators at NYU, an R01 grant to further this area of study.” In addition, Shany Picciotto, PhD, a postdoc in Dr. Shoag’s lab, has received a Research Scholar Award from the American Urological Association – one of only 15 researchers in the U.S. to do so. Dr. Picciotto will conduct a two-year study of how chemotherapy impacts mutation burden in normal cells and how this may impact mutations in the children of cancer survivors. Dr. Shoag is also working to develop more effective therapies against prostate cancer. He received a $1.1 million Physician Research Grant from the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program of the U.S. Department of Defense – one of only six researchers in the country to receive this grant for fiscal year 2024. “My lab leveraged large-scale clinical data to discover a new target in prostate cancer,” Dr. Shoag says. “This grant will support understanding this target in mice, cells and patient-derived prostate cancer models to help us better understand prostate cancer biology and ultimately develop better therapies, which will benefit patients with advanced disease.” Read more at https://lnkd.in/gpsPu-Ed #prostatecancer #NIH #research #physicianexcellence #patientsfirst

UH patients undergoing surgery for esophageal resection and lung resection have among the lowest mortality and complication rates in the nation, according to data from the Society of Thoracic Surgery (STS). The STS collects data from more than 100 of the largest academic and non-academic hospitals in the nation. Its database is considered the most detailed and advanced surgical database in the country. It reveals that that UH’s results place our program among the top 5% in the country for fewest deaths and fewest complications. UH Cleveland Medical Center’s Division of Thoracic and Esophageal Surgery has outstanding results for esophageal resection, and the program has ranked in the top tier of the nation’s largest and most advanced programs since data was first collected. UH’s rate of major complications and mortality is just two-thirds that of most other major academic medical centers. ”UH Cleveland Medical Center’s results are a testament to the exceptional surgical skills of the entire department, including thoracic surgeons Dr. Christopher Towe, Dr. Leo Tapias, Dr. Jillian Sinopoli and Dr. Bo Jiang,” says Philip Linden, MD, Chief, Division of Thoracic and Esophageal Surgery at UH Cleveland Medical Center. “It also reflects outstanding patient care delivered by nurses and physician extenders, such as Jason Brown, PA, Lucie Engelskirker, NP, Noreen Vick, NP, Madeline Meyers, PA, and Jackie McCluskey, PA.” Read more at https://lnkd.in/gjEnKTZR #thoracicsurgery #thoracicsurgeryquality #healthcarequality #patientsfirst

Nearly one-fifth of deaths worldwide are attributable to sepsis – with half occurring in children and teens, a figure even higher than the lives lost to pediatric cancer. For those who do survive sepsis, one-third have complications that delay their return to a high quality of life. Charles G. Macias, MD, MPH, Chief of Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Chief Quality Officer at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, has been tackling this issue from a quality improvement perspective for the last 15 years. In 2009, he started making inquiries to pediatric emergency departments at children’s hospitals about how they were achieving good sepsis outcomes. What he found, he says, was many were not. Now, after a variety of different efforts, that has changed. The Improving Pediatric Sepsis Outcomes (IPSO) collaborative of the Children’s Hospital Association, launched in 2016, has proven successful in moving the needle on pediatric sepsis. Dr. Macias was one of three co-chairs and co-developer of the quality improvement collaborative that at its peak had 66 children's hospitals participating. The results speak for themselves: The IPSO collaborative has saved 570 pediatric lives so far, in addition to preventing over 72,000 hospital days, 44,000 ICU days, 24,000 ventilator days, 13,000 vasoactive medication days and 3,500 episodes of organ dysfunction among children and teens in participating children’s hospitals. “The impact to healthcare across the nation is huge when you consider not just the reduction in the burden of sepsis, but more importantly, the relief that parents feel when their child doesn't have to be an intensive care unit.,” Dr. Macias says. “These are children for which early in their development we have altered the course of their well-being… forever. They will become members of society who are working and functioning with a normal quality of life.” Read more at https://lnkd.in/gazmFsrm #pediatricsepsis #healthcarequality #physicianexcellence #patientsfirst
