On Sunday, actor James Van Der Beek announced that he has been diagnosed with colorectal cancer at age 47, highlighting the fact that it’s not just a disease that older people need to be concerned about. University of Colorado Cancer Center leader Christopher Lieu, MD, who specializes in GI cancers, sat down to answer questions about colorectal cancer. Ways to reduce risk include “increasing awareness, making sure that people are seeing their doctor regularly, that they have an active and healthy lifestyle and a healthy diet, and that when people develop concerning symptoms, to not ignore them,” says Lieu. Lung cancer risk doesn't just come from smoking or vaping. Radon, asbestos, and radiation can also be factors. Radon which is more prevalent in Colorado compared to other states, is the leading cause among non-smokers. The CU Cancer Center is home to one of the world’s best known lung cancer teams and has led many different breakthroughs in how to treat cancers that affect the lungs. If you’re going to get surgery for your cancer on a Friday the 13th, and your name is already Jason, you might as well lean into the coincidence. At least that’s what Jason Patton thought in 2019, when he went in for surgery with CU Cancer Center member Marco Del Chiaro, MD, PhD. “I came to the hospital that day dressed as Jason Voorhees from ‘Friday the 13th,’” says Patton, 47, who lives in Sheridan, Colorado. “I said, ‘Something’s happened to me, and I came here to kill cancer.’ Dr. Del Chiaro got a good kick out of it. He said, ‘The way you came in with that attitude? Those are the type of people who make it.’” Learn more about Patton's journey to being disease-free here: https://lnkd.in/gPpej-VB #Oncology #Oncologist #Colorado #CancerCare #Halloween

What’s creeping through your walls? Radon is a hidden danger—you can’t see, taste, or smell it. It is a gas that can seep into homes and buildings from the ground. Radon is the 2nd leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. and the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Half of all homes tested in Colorado have radon levels higher than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s recommended level. The CU Cancer Center's Office of Community Outreach & Engagement is offering free radon test kits to Colorado residents as supplies are available. Protect your loved ones and clear the air with a free radon test kit for your home: https://lnkd.in/g9dVqTT9 For Spanish: https://lnkd.in/gjQivKfW #LungCancerAwareness #LungCancer
