ICYMI, last week UpLift and co-sponsor @Capital Crossroads, hosted a Community Conversation about important solutions to Central Iowa's housing needs. Experts from Iowa Legal Aid, Homeward, Polk County Housing Trust Fund, @HOME Inc., and @ IMPACT Community Action Partnership presented their work and potential solutions to meeting the needs of Iowa families. Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the Fixing the Foundation: Solutions to Central Iowa Housing Needs event hosted by UpLift- The Central Iowa Basic Income Pilot and Capital Crossroads (CXR). The panel did an incredible job highlighting both the work they have been doing and the actions still needed in addressing housing challenges in our community. For those of us working in these spaces, we understand the connection between food insecurity, housing, and other symptoms of poverty. One takeaway that stood out to me was how, during the pandemic, "Iowa saw record low eviction hearings due to the eviction moratorium and the Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP)". Similarly, food pantries served fewer families during that time because of increased support through food stamps and other assistance programs. The correlation between providing the right resources and reducing need really drives home the importance of sustained, effective support programs. And how amazing is this illustration by Nathan Wright a graphic recorder, who perfectly captured some of the key insights from the discussion!
