Nora D. Volkow was born on March 27, 1956, in Mexico City, to a family with deep historical roots. She is the great-granddaughter of Leon Trotsky, the Russian revolutionary, and grew up in the house where he died (now the Leon Trotsky Museum). This unusual family history, combined with her upbringing in Mexico, played a formative role in shaping her ambition – to positively influence the world through science. Volkow earned her M.D. in Mexico City before moving to the United States for postdoctoral training in psychiatry at New York University. During her psychiatry residency she began working in PET scan research, exploring the brain’s functionality and organization, laying a foundation for her groundbreaking work at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) in New York 🏥. At BNL, she made significant contributions to neuroimaging research, particularly in understanding the brain mechanisms underlying addiction. This work helped reshape societal perceptions of addiction, framing it not as a moral failing, but as a chronic disorder driven by changes in brain structure, particularly through dopamine. In 2003, Volkow became the director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), a position she holds to this day. Her work at NIDA, and in a variety of academic and leadership roles, continues to influence both public policy and scientific approaches to addiction treatment around the world. ✏️ Julissa Mora is a Cuban American author and illustrator specializing in children's media, illustrating books, toys, packaging design, and puzzles.
