At UPS Healthcare, we are committed to making a meaningful impact—not just through the services we offer, but also in the communities we serve. This week, we had the honor of partnering with Camp Kudzu Inc., a Georgia-based nonprofit dedicated to supporting children and families living with type 1 diabetes. Our team came together to prepare supplies for Camp Kudzu's upcoming Junior Retreat, designed for youth campers in 3rd to 6th grade. 🏕️ This retreat helps kids to build confidence, form friendships, and learn essential diabetes management skills in a supportive environment. 💙 A heartfelt thank you to Camp Kudzu for allowing us to contribute to their incredible mission. We’re also grateful to our amazing volunteers, who embody the values of UPS Healthcare and the spirit of community care. 🏥 Clarissa Harlowe Barton was born in 1821 in a farming community in North Oxford, MA. She showed an early interest in caregiving and, despite her shyness, became a teacher at age 17. She later helped open the first free public school in New Jersey, bringing education to an underserved population—who replaced her with a man as soon as the school was completed, eventually driving her out altogether. ✈️ She moved to Washington, D.C., becoming one of the first women to work at the U.S. Patent Office. But there was no respite from ongoing harassment and sexism—she was eventually removed from office by the Buchanan administration under the guise of her “political views”. While she later returned to the office under President Lincoln, her true calling emerged with the outbreak of the Civil War. ❤️ Barton was thrown into the war from its first moments, personally caring for more than 40 soldiers after the Baltimore Riot. She devoted herself fully to the cause of aiding soldiers, using personal resources and public campaigning to collect and distribute medical supplies. 🩺 Despite initial resistance from military officials, she began providing medical aid at the front lines, earning the nickname "Angel of the Battlefield” as she worked, often under fire, to distribute medical supplies, clean field hospitals, apply dressings, and serve food to wounded soldiers in several battles. After the war, she founded the Missing Soldiers Office, helping to identify over 22,000 missing men and properly mark thousands of graves. 🌎 Exhausted, Barton traveled to Europe in 1869, where she learned about the International Red Cross. Soon, she was assisting relief efforts during the Franco-Prussian War, after which she was awarded the Prussian Iron Cross and the Golden Cross of Baden. She returned to the U.S. and lobbied for the establishment of the American Red Cross. In 1881, she succeeded in founding the organization, expanding its mission beyond wartime aid to include relief efforts during floods, famines, hurricanes, and wars, both in the U.S. and abroad. 💙 After leaving the Red Cross, Barton lived in Glen Echo, MD, until her death in 1912 at the age of 90. Throughout her life, Barton overcame constant discrimination and societal expectations to become a pioneering figure in healthcare—whose legacy of humanitarian work continues to save countless lives each year. 🎨 Violeta Noy is an illustrator from Barcelona whose playful, bold, and vibrant work takes inspiration from folklore and mythology to represent the strength and diversity present in our communities.
