📌 Pilot Action in Szabolcs 05, Hungary In the framework of the Beyond the Urban project, the second pilot action of the Szabolcs 05 Regional Development Association of Municipalities was organised in Mátészalka, Hungary on 21 October. A training material introducing the Beyond the Urban project, sustainable mobility in general and mobility challenges in Mátészalka was presented and tested with 9th and 11th grade classes of Esze Tamás Gymnasium of Mátészalka. After the interactive presentation and the students' questions, the children completed a mobility quiz, which will be evaluated and reported in the Integrated Action Plan. In cooperation with the schools in Mátészalka, the training material will be sent to all local primary and secondary schools, where it will be presented by teachers and discussed with students in environment, geography or science classes in the coming school years. 📌 Beyond the Urban: The car takes a back seat in the transformation of Europe’s urban-rural dynamics ✍️ Our Lead Expert, Dr. Clyde Hutchinson's article has been updated and is now featured as an URBACT Story. We encourage you to read it to gain deeper insights into the challenges of rural mobility and the focus of our Network, Beyond the Urban. "We may live in a highly connected world, but the rural-urban dynamics in European cities indicate a growing disconnection. This has given rise to social exclusion, economic disparities and environmentalchallenges, affecting the well-being of residents in urban and rural areas. URBACT’s Beyond the Urban Action Planning Network has embarked on a three-year journey to tackle key challenges to connectivity between rural and urban areas. This article shares some insights from a series of intensive visits across the partner regions. These findings reveal common challenges faced by communities throughout Europe, along with recommendations and recent updates from Network activities". On the 2nd and 3rd of October, our URBACT Network Beyond the Urban held its 3rd Transnational Meeting in Bucharest-Ilfov, organized with our partners Asociația de Dezvoltare Intercomunitară pentru Transport Public București – Ilfov (TPBI). Recap of the Second Day (October 3rd) 📅 Day 2 took us deeper into collaboration and hands-on learning! 🧐 We began with a Mid-Term Review meeting, where URBACT Secretariat representative Irina ROTARU joined us to reflect on the progress we've made so far and discuss potential adaptations to ensure we achieve our best outcomes. This was followed by a guided tour and coffee break at the National Library 📚, giving everyone a chance to connect and recharge. 🤝 During our Coordination Meeting, we received key updates on pilot projects. In the Cooperative Session 📝 , we were divided into three groups, each focused on common strategic objectives. These groups brainstormed ways to collaborate more effectively and leverage shared learning to develop better solutions. 🚎 After a delicious lunch at the historic Hanu' lui Manuc 🍽️, we visited the Obregia Bus Depot for a tour of the facilities, led by Marius Nicolae from the Societatea de Transport București STB S.A.. This hands-on experience gave us valuable insights into the sustainability transition strategy of the STB service operator. Another productive day filled with collaborative sessions and an informative site visit! We’re looking forward to the 4th Transnational Meeting on Culture & Behaviour in March in Hradec Králové, Czechia! 💪✨

Recap of the First Day (October 2nd) 🌍 Day 1 of our event was all about innovation and integration in mobility! 🚉🚀 We kicked off with a theoretical session on Innovations in Urban and Rural Connections, led by Dr. Clyde Hutchinson, where we explored the future of integrated ticketing systems and digital solutions for rural mobility 📲 . Each of our partners then presented their Strategic Objectives, setting the stage for strong collaboration 🤝. 💡 The next session, led by Iris Popescu, in collaboration with Alex Cucu and Alex Tache, focused on enhancing urban spaces for active mobility and accessibility ♿ . It was an eye-opening experience, helping us challenge our biases and approach accessibility as a global social advancement—not merely as a health or incapacity issue. 🌳 We concluded the day with a site visit to the Străulești Park & Ride , reflecting on the services and amenities enabling seamless and inclusive multimodal exchange. From there we started a competitive Transit-Pass Game 🏅 , deepening our understanding of intermodality. The day ended with a visit to the National Railway Company 🚂 , where we toured the Transportation Museum. The first day was packed with learning, exploration, and collaboration—a fantastic start to our transnational meeting!

🚈 🚲 🚶♀️ 🚌 Nudging Sustainable Transport Choices: Applying Behavioural Science in Mobility ✍ Brian Marrinan For decades, transport decision-makers have predominantly focused on technological advances and diversifying urban transport services to meet growing mobility needs. The common assumption has been that passengers make rational decisions based on travel time and cost. This approach overlooks the complexity of human behaviour. People are not purely rational actors; they are creatures of habit, emotionally driven, influenced by their environment, and guided by social norms and their own self-image. The Beyond the Urban URBACT network recently held a webinar entitled “Moving People: Using Science to Nudge Behaviours in Transport and Mobility” that introduced this topic to the partners, in advance of a deeper dive into the topic at the planned TNM in Hradec Králové early next year. The attendees learned that to create truly sustainable urban and rural mobility systems, we must look beyond the traditional lens and embrace the insights provided by behavioural science to nudge people towards more sustainable transport choices. 🚴♂️ 🚂 🚎 Beyond the city with European Mobility Week (EMW)  📅 From 16 to 22 September 🎥 We are very happy to share with you all a nice video from Kočani in Northern Macedonia, one of our partners, about the EMW. The municipality organised a bicycle parade where young people, students, bicycle clubs and all interested citizens rode along a certain bicycle route in order to promote cycling as a means of transport. For the youngest, they prepared a small local public event, Velo Rodeo, consisting of a polygon with 4-5 exercises to improve children's cycling skills and an educational station with LEGO bricks. Have a look at some pictures of the event 👇 https://lnkd.in/dUdMj6sn #BeyondtheUrban #URBACT #BtUKocani #ruralmobility #urbanrural #sustainability #mobility

🤔What have we done so far? Did you know that one of our partners in Bucharest (Romania) has signed a feasibility study for a new metropolitan train line that will be around 32 kilometres long, with 11 stops, covering 6 municipalities from the north of the city, which will also be connected to the zone's railway station? Or that the partner in Osona (Spain) has managed to involve the Autonomous Government of Catalonia and the Provincial Council in their Urbact Local Group? Read about these and other achievements of our partners in our quarterly network report, from April to June 👇 https://lnkd.in/ePDEQJPE #ruralmobility #urbanrural #sustainability #BeyondtheUrban #URBACT
