Built in 1940, this stunning building was originally home to Knapp Chevrolet, one of Houston's oldest family-operated car dealerships. It's a rare surviving example of Streamline Moderne architecture, a style that emerged in the 1930s featuring sleek, aerodynamic forms inspired by industrial design. The Knapp building includes architectural highlights like a tan brick exterior, distinctive black brick stripes, large display windows, and curved metal awnings that exemplify the essence of Streamline Moderne design. After years without usage and receiving state recognition as a historical landmark, this rare architectural treasure underwent an extensive renovation in 2022. With guidance from the THC, the restoration team, Urbano Architects, carefully preserved its unique features while adapting the space for modern use. Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, 1230 Houston Ave has found new life as Mont Art House, a vibrant gallery showcasing local talent. This designation not only recognizes the building's historical significance but also provides tax incentives for its continued preservation. The successful restoration of this Streamline Moderne landmark is a shining example of how adaptive reuse can breathe new life into historic structures while honoring their past. 📸: Urbano Architects

Today! Very exciting news for the community of 3rd Ward HTX—and for the city at large! A special client has reinvested in restoring a 1950’s-era building, marking a palpable win for historic preservation efforts in the City of Houston. This major step forward into construction has us absolutely elated 🌝 . In a city striving to overcome the legacy of disposable architecture, this serves to remind us that the most sustainable building is indeed the one that already exists, and boy the history this building boasts! I am incredibly excited to collaborate with Laura Carrera, AIA and her talented team at Urbano Architects to bring this vision to life! #Architecture #ThirdWard #HTX #HistoricPreservation #CushWake
