Can data-driven analytics help design more effective interventions to put a dent in the housing affordability crisis that has now reached epidemic proportions? The housing crisis has become so pervasive today that it affects would-be home buyers and renters in virtually every urban area – not just the usual suspects. At UrbanSim, we have been building analytical tools to help cities, states and national governments grapple with these challenges and evaluate alternative interventions to help ease the financial strain on households. A worthy problem to focus on, considering that housing is the biggest single expense in most household budgets and the largest form of investment for homeowners, and it has reached a dangerously high point for renters and first-time buyers. In previous posts we shared how our analytics tools helped US Housing and Urban Development update their Fair Market Rent methodology and helped the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation generate support to create a $4 Billion investment in a Housing Accelerator Fund. Today, we are pleased to announce that the research paper UrbanSim CEO Paul Waddell and Head of Product Arezoo Besharati presented at the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies symposium on “Bringing Digitalization Home: How Can Technology Address Housing Challenges?” has now been published on the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies website. It describes how the UrbanSim platform has been used to generate pragmatic insights to accelerate housing supply and help mitigate high housing costs.
