The Omaha District has the oversight of the Missouri River Recovery Program. As the nation’s longest river, it has suffered from violent floods, creating erosion and muddy water. We are excited to celebrate National Hydropower Day today! The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is the largest owner-operator of hydroelectric power plants in the United States, and one of the largest in the world. The 75 USACE plants have a total installed capacity of nearly 22,000 megawatts and produce more than 72 billion kilowatt-hours a year. This is approximately 25% of the nation’s total hydropower output, or about 3.5% percent of the nation's total electric power production. Along the Missouri River itself, USACE operates a total of 36 generator units capable of producing approximately 2.4 million kilowatts of power. The water used to produce electricity at Fort Peck Dam in Montana passes through five other powerplants, each producing more electricity on its way to the ocean. This makes hydropower one of the most efficient forms of power generation for use by the people of the Midwest. The last of the dams built by the Omaha District was the Big Bend Dam. Situated roughly 50 miles southeast of Pierre, S.D., the dam drew its name from the nearby 21-mile loop in the Missouri where the river inscribed an almost complete circle. Today, the dam provides visitors with wildlife views along the Missouri River at Lake Sharpe. #90YearsStrong #OmahaUSACE #Essayons

As the southernmost main stem dam, the Gavins Point Dam plays a critical role in regulating water levels to serve commercial navigation and to reduce bank erosion downstream. Located four miles west of Yankton, S.D., it is the smallest of the of the Omaha District’s dams on the Missouri, and is an earthen structure accompanied by a powerhouse, three power intakes and a concrete spillway. #90YearsStrong #OmahaUSACE #Essayons

#OTD in 1962, President John F. Kennedy officially dedicated the Oahe Dam. Located six miles north of Pierre, South Dakota, Oahe was the third dam built by the Omaha District. Its 91 million cubic yards of earth made Oahe, upon its completion, the largest rolled earthfill dam in the world. #90YearsStrong #OmahaUSACE #Essayons

Located in the shadows of the Rocky Mountains and urban skyscrapers of Denver is the Omaha District’s Tri-Lakes Project, which includes Cherry Creek, Chatfield and Bear Creek dams and levees. Constructed from 1948 through 1982, the three dams protect the region from South Platte River floodwaters that plagued the area for more than 100 years. #90YearsStrong #OmahaUSACE #Essayons
