About us
Building the Future from the Ground Up!! US Biochar Initiative is a not-for-profit organization promoting the sustainable production and use of biochar through research, policy, technology and implementation! Biochars are fine-grained, highly porous charcoals that help soils retain nutrients and water. Biochar saves water. Biochar reduces dependency on chemical inputs. Biochar is an investment, not a cost. Biochar is decarbonizes the built environment and heavy industry. Biochar carbon can be used in construction, as filler, as pigment, as building element to reduce embodied carbon in everyday items. We can utilize above ground resources to solve many of our carbon removal and carbon management concerns. USBI hosts meetings, conferences and workshops to discover practical uses of biochar in North America. Recent projects include: market studies; education materials; networking; demonstration projects; and coordination with sectors interested in research, production, and use of biochar including agriculture, forestry and wood product, biomass energy, organics recycling, building products and ecosystem services. USBI is a partner with the International Biochar Initiative and collaborates with other biochar organizations around the world. USBI is managed by a group of volunteers representing every aspect of biochar production and use. Join USBI at our next North American Biochar Conference, September 2025, in Minneapolis, MN. USA

High Plains Biochar has been awarded a Translation Grant for work in Soil Carbon Capture and Analytics. This $250K grant award will assist with the installation biochar stoves in Colorado and Wyoming to generate carbon credits and build soil health practices. Rowdy Yeatts has been pioneering small profile computer-controlled mid-tech systems development for years as well as fine-tuning low tech flame cap and retort style processes for the creation of biochar and heat capture. Funding is from the National Science Foundation and distributed through the Colorado - Wyoming Climate Resilience Engine. The involvement of the NSF and the Colorado-Wyoming Climate Resilience Engine adds credibility and visibility to the project. This recognition helps validate the scientific and environmental benefits of biochar technology, opening doors for further research, partnerships, green job development, and funding opportunities across the United States. Have you recently been awarded a grant to advance biochar, funding through programs such as USDA CPS Code 336 and Code 384, RCPP, or similar and want to share your story? Please message us or connect with info@biochar-us.org and we can amplify your news. Congratulations to High Plains Biochar! https://lnkd.in/g5Ypniay

🌳 Urban Trees: Unexpected Driver of a New Biochar Market! 🌳 YES! The urban trees we walk past every day could be the key to unlocking a powerful, sustainable market for biochar. More and more municipalities are recognizing how crucial biochar is for thriving trees in our communities. If you're involved in urban planning, environmental sustainability, architectural landscaping, or biochar production, you need to watch this webinar hosted by Adam McCullough of Vermont Urban & Community Forestry that connects the dots between healthy urban trees and biochar. In cities like Stockholm, Sweden, and Montpelier, Vermont USA, biochar is being used to address some of the biggest challenges facing urban trees: compacted soil, poor water retention, and limited root growth. By incorporating biochar into structural soil solutions, these cities are not just improving tree health, they are building the foundation for a growing market for biochar products. Every urban tree planted using biochar opens up new demand, creating a ripple effect that extends far beyond forestry. Here’s why this matters: As more municipalities adopt biochar-enhanced solutions for tree planting and green infrastructure, they will drive significant demand for physical biochar. (We love building markets!) This means new opportunities for biochar producers, local businesses, and even governments looking to meet sustainability goals. We look towards a future where biochar becomes a standard component of all urban development projects, from tree pits to green roofs to turf management, and cities become major players in driving market demand. This shift isn't just about trees—it’s about creating resilient, climate-positive, carbon-smart cities. Municipalities that invest in biochar for urban greening are not only improving their tree canopies, they're helping to mitigate climate change by sequestering carbon and reducing urban heat islands. Best part? This is an opportunity for cities, biochar producers, and green tech innovators to work together and scale these solutions. 🌱 Watch how urban tree initiatives are laying the groundwork for a booming biochar market. Whether you're in city planning, architectural landscaping, the biochar industry, or simply passionate about sustainable urban environments, this is a trend you don’t want to miss. Biochar is safe, scaleable, and shovel ready! Share your experience with biochar and tree planting. Join us in Minneapolis, MN, on September 15-18, 2025, for our next North American Biochar Conference with the theme of community level biochar. Mark your calendars now and continue the discussion around biochar for tree health, turf management, waste management, water filtration, and much more. https://lnkd.in/gErNFuhd

On this Indigenous Peoples Day in the US, let's discuss the historical relationship between biochar and original peoples through human history, especially focusing on ancient agricultural practices. 🔥 The Indigenous Amazonian communities developed terra preta ("dark earth")—a rich, fertile soil created by adding charred organic matter (biochar), pottery shards, and other materials to otherwise poor, acidic tropical soils. This practice, predating modern biochar research by centuries, serves as a historical example of ingenuity in sustainable land management mimicking natural processes. This Indigenous knowledge has enduring relevance in today’s context. The Indigenous communities used fire in a controlled manner to not only clear land but also enhance its long-term fertility. This contrasts with more destructive slash-and-burn techniques in recent centuries that deplete soil nutrients over time and do not honor natures balance. The biochar-enhanced soils of terra preta remain fertile after hundreds, if not thousands, of years, showcasing a deep understanding of carbon sequestration and soil regeneration. Indigenous methods like this offer valuable lessons for modern biochar practices that range from crafted slash piles, pit burns, flame cap kilns, and even our modern industrial biomass processing plants 🏭 . Integrating traditional knowledge with contemporary technology can contribute to mitigating climate change, improving soil health, and fostering sustainable agricultural systems worldwide. By framing biochar as both an ancient -and- modern tool, we connect Indigenous wisdom to the broader narrative of how biochar can help in carbon capture and climate resilience, advocating for a respectful blending of traditional knowledge with decades of current scientific research and biochar implementation. 🚜 Building the Future from the Ground Up: The US Biochar Initiative is a not-for-profit organization promoting the sustainable production and use of biochar through research, policy, technology and implementation! 👓 Our Vision: To leave a legacy of fertile soils and carbon sequestered by raising awareness of and increasing the utilization of biochar through collaborative efforts with organizations involved in production, application, and research. 👩🌾 Our Mission: Promoting biochar in North America for sustainable food security , improved soil fertility 🌻 , carbon sequestration, environmental benefit, and climate resilience .
