Lieutenant Commander Jose L. Rodriguez enlisted in U.S. Coast Guard in 1980 and retired in 2005. When he was a Lieutenant, Jose Rodriguez made history as the first Hispanic to command a TACLET (Tactical Law Enforcement Team) when he led TACLET South from 1996 to 1998. He also became the first Coast Guardsman to command a U.S. Marine Corps unit, taking charge of the Riverine Training Center at Camp Lejeune in 1999. That same year, Rodriguez became the first Hispanic-American Coast Guardsman to earn Gold Navy/Marine Corps jump wings and was assigned to a Jump Billet. Later, he became one of the first commanding officers of the Coast Guard’s newly commissioned Maritime Safety and Security Teams (MSSTs), with MSSTs 91101 and 91102 led by two Hispanic officers. sadly, Lt.
