Curious about the future of electricity markets dominated by intermittent renewable energy sources and if it will replace the conventional merit order? Werner Antweiler (UBC Sauder School of Business) and Felix Muesgens' (Brandenburgische Technische Universität Cottbus-Senftenberg) research explored these questions about electricity markets in Texas and Germany. Their findings reveal the emergence of a 'new merit order' in market equilibrium. Despite the dominance of intermittent sources, energy-only markets remain not only viable but also functional.
