  • IIGH, in collaboration with the KSOM Department of Population and Public Health Sciences, over the past year developed and adopted these Principles of Local and Global Engagement to guide all aspects of our research, education, and community programs. We collaborate with a broad range of civil society, academic, government, and UN partners, in the United States and around the world. We recognize our responsibility as an academic institution based in the global north to operate ethically and equitably within these partnerships. These eight principles form the backbone of how we seek to engage with partners worldwide and provide actionable guidance for our work. Aligned with international human rights norms, these principles emphasize respect for human rights as central to ethical and equitable engagement. Our commitment to justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility is integrated into all areas of our work. Read more about these principles—including key components, actions, and the details about the process for development, which included reviewing similar initiatives and seeking input from our many partners here: https://lnkd.in/gYKfmgEr

  • 🕰 Flashback to 5 years of IIGH events! 🕰    Since our launch in 2019, we have aimed to shine a light on inequality and injustice in all areas of global health —from the research and trainings we do, to our events and strategic collaborations with partners worldwide.     Despite significant progress in some areas, global health disparities are rampant, accompanied by increasing setbacks in human rights protections worldwide. In light of these challenges, we framed our 5th anniversary event series under the theme "Until We Are All Equal." Watch all of this year’s anniversary events here: https://lnkd.in/gpK6VXpx   We’ve organized many unforgettable events over the past five years. To celebrate, we’re taking a look back at one event from each of the previous years that seem particularly salient in the current moment:    🌟 2023, "Can Reparations Help to End Racial Disparities in Health?"  Drawing on the recent California Reparations Task Force Report, this event considered the opportunities reparations can offer for health and well-being in our community, connecting work at USC, in Los Angeles, and across California. Watch here: https://lnkd.in/gtapJbqt    🌟 2022, “Why Should Californians Care About Global Health?”   We welcomed Representatives Judy Chu (CA-27) and Katie Porter (CA-45) for a conversation on bridging our global health priorities with the local needs of people in California and across the country. Watch here: https://lnkd.in/g_jE52nN    🌟 2021, "Power, Privilege, and Reproductive Justice in Global Health"   Dr. Fisseha, globally recognized thought leader and change agent to shed light on the inequities and asymmetrical power structures ingrained within global health, and what can be done to address them. Watch here: https://lnkd.in/gBJf6Fng    🌟 2020, “Addressing the Dual Challenges of Climate Change and COVID-19”  Dr. Nabarro, World Health Organization Special Envoy on COVID-19, addressed the dual challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change. Watch here: https://lnkd.in/gzNNYdAm    🌟 2019, "A Life in Global Health: Expect the Unexpected"  IIGH, in collaboration with the USC Dornsife Spatial Sciences Institute, hosted Dr. Breman for a talk where he shared his vast experience and wisdom on work in global health. Watch here: https://lnkd.in/gzJV85at    🌟 2018, " Celebrating 70 Years of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights”  To celebrate the creation of IIGH we hosted a symposium gathering hundreds of community members, students, organizers, activists, speakers from academia, the UN, government, and civil society. Participants discussed why and how human rights matter and can make a difference for sustainable development, health, and well-being locally and around the world.
