“Initially, we engaged with a Native community in Modoc County, the farthest northeast county in California, to learn about their needs and perspectives of living in rural areas in relation to commercial tobacco control,” explains Claradina Soto, associate professor of clinical population and public health sciences. “We learned that more youth had started vaping and the adults had tried to dissuade them. However, when young people raised questions about common misconceptions around vaping, the adults did not know how to advise them. Essentially, they said ‘we need to understand vaping!’ Click here to learn about how she is tackling youth vaping in Native American communities through community partnership: https://lnkd.in/gJ-n6cin #usc #research #vaping #communityengagement #americanindian #nativealaskan #participatorybasedresearch

🚨American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) high school youth are twice more likely than the general population to use electronic vapor products. 📊 They also have the highest current cigarette smoking rate of any other race or ethnicity in this age group. 🔍 In order to address growing concerns around youth vaping in underserved and hard-to-reach AIAN populations, researchers from University of Southern California and the RESOURCES FOR INDIAN STUDENT EDUCATION INC (RISE), an American Indian education center, conducted a community-based participatory research initiative. 💬“Our aim was to foster a partnership to elevate community-based research to ensure that the populations we are working with are included in the entire process,” says Claradina Soto, PhD, associate professor of clinical population and public health sciences at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. ⬇️ Learn more about this community-based participatory research initiative: https://lnkd.in/gJ-n6cin USC Research and Innovation Ricky Bluthenthal Chanita Hughes-Halbert USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center Genevieve Dunton #usc #publichealth #vaping #AIAN #research #faculty #community #communityengagement #partnership

Join us virtually or in Washington, DC for the Africa-U.S. forum: “Intergenerational Solidarity: An Issue for African Health Systems” on Monday, August 26, at 6:00 am PDT/9:00 am ET. In the lead-up to the UN Summit of the Future, we will hear from African experts on what solidarity between current and future generations looks like for Africa’s health systems — from promoting health equity across the entire life course; to fostering intergenerational programs and services; to adapting health systems to meet the challenge and opportunity of demographic change. This forum is being held in partnership between the Annenberg Center on Communication Leadership and Policy’s Africa-U.S. Forum and the USC Institute on Inequalities in Global Health. The monthly Africa-U.S. forums are presented with George Washington University, Howard University, the University of the Witwatersrand (in Johannesburg), and the Public Diplomacy Council of America. IN THE MEDIA: LA is home to 17 of the country's most polluted sites. Environmental epidemiologist Elizabeth Kamai, PhD, was interviewed by Spectrum News explaining the long-lasting effects of contamination. 💬 “There is research that shows that people who live near superfund sites have higher levels of of metals in their bodies. Heavy metals like lead or arsenic. There’s also research that shows there can be lower life expectancy on average in communities near superfund sites,” Kamai said. Click below to read more.
